Docs refer patients to private labs

Statesman News Service, SILIGURI, Dec.13 : Allegations of a section of North Bengal Medical College and Hospital doctors referring patients to private laboratories for pathology tests have raised questions against the legality of the action. Admitting that the action was grossly illegal, the NBMCH principal Mr Udayan Ganguly has assured to take action about the ‘errant’ doctors. But first he needs proof, he said.
Instances exist when physicians attached with the NBMCH refer patients to various private laboratories. When informed of the development, Dr Ganguly said: “It is an illegal practice. Action would be taken against such doctors if proven.”

Zoo plans to release two red pandas

SILIGURI, Dec. 13: Encouraged by the success of 2003, the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (PNHZP) authority of Darjeeling is planning to release more two more red pandas in the wild. The PNHZP takes care of animals who live on the higher altitudes. The zoo is the only one in India to achieve success in captive breeding of endangered Himalayan species. The Red Panda is a highly endangered Himalayan animal for which the Darjeeling zoo has started a captive breeding programme. The presence of red panda, Tibetan wolf, snow leopard and Siberian tiger have put put the lives of pheasants in danger. Most of the Himalayan pheasants are considered as endangered species.

Parisangh tosses up Gorkhaland cause

KURSEONG, Dec. 13: The Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP), a political organisation of the Gorkha community has joined the Gorkhaland cause. To intensify the statehood claim, the BGP would hold a four-day meet under the banner of national executive council in Delhi, starting from 21 December.The BGP, central committee, general secretary and spokesperson Mr Sukhman Moktan informed that to pressurise the centre for a separate state for Gorkha Community, the BGP would stage a dharna in New Delhi on 21 December and organise a meet including seminar in Delhi.

Carol fest to welcome Christmas

The Telegraph, Kalimpong, Dec. 13: The four-day Kalimpong Carol Festival from December 17 will herald the Christmas celebrations here. Into its fifth year, the festival will be held from 5pm to 8pm at Main Road.

The Christians of the subdivision come together under the banner of Kalimpong Carol Festival Committee to organise the event.

Morcha at BJP door in Delhi

The Telegraph, Darjeeling, Dec. 13: A seven-member delegation led by Bimal Gurung, the president of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, is camping in Delhi to drive home the statehood demand by playing on the security concerns of north Bengal.

The party, which has been against the Sixth Schedule status for the hills, said since the region was flanked by international borders, every effort should be made to preserve peace in the area.
