Kurseong, Dec. 25: Tension gripped Dilaram, 11 km from here, after the women’s wing of the GNLF and Gorkha Janmukti Morcha pelted each other with stones this morning.
According to police, the Morcha supporters had come to the Dilaram outpost demanding the arrest of GNLF members who had allegedly torn their party flags on Sunday.
The Gorkha National Women’s Organisation, too, had come to the outpost at that time to lodge a complaint against the Morcha, whose members they claimed, were forcefully taking money from residents as donations.
A little away from the outpost, Nuri Sherpa, the Morcha convener of Dilaram-Chaitapani, was beaten up by some GNLF supporters. He was admitted to Kurseong Subdivisional Hospital with minor injuries. N.B. Khawas, the general secretary of the Kurseong branch of the GNLF, said his party members had been provoked by the Morcha supporters because of which they retaliated.
Later in the evening, the Morcha, after a meeting with the police, issued an ultimatum that those who had torn the flags should be arrested within 24 hours, failing which they would be start a “bigger movement” across the Kurseong subdivision. The Morcha supporters had also staged a road blockade at Dilaram for about 20 minutes in the afternoon.
