GNLF supports Centre’s proposal for state reorganisation committee
Posted by barunroy on January 12, 2008
Kurseong, Jan. 12: In a significant move, the Gorkha National liberation Front (GNLF), which was harping for the inclusion of the Darjeeling Hills in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution in the recent times, today expressed support to the Congress and the UPA government’s proposal to set up a state reorganisation committee. The GNLF Kurseong branch general secretary, NB Khawas, today said that the recent discussion between the Congress high command and the UPA government to set up a SRC is appreciable. “The GNLF supports it,” Khawas added. “But it has also been reported that the SRC would be set-up only for the proposed Telengana and Vidarbha states. If it is so, it would be an injustice for us, who have been demanding Gorkhaland,” Khawas said.
“That would be a criminal offence on the part of the UPA government,” he added.
When asked if the proposed Sixth Schedule status for the Darjeeling Hills would disturb the formation of Gorkhaland under the SRC, he claimed that the proposed Sixth Schedule has its own track and was a step towards statehood.

A MUST READ

Kolkata, January 11: The Gorkhas, who came from Nepal during British-occupied India in search of their livelihood and settled in and around Darjeeling, initiated the Gorkhaland movement in 1952 at the instigation of the undivided Communist Party of India (CPI) under the leadership of Ratanlal Brahman, Ganesh Subba, Ananda Pathak and others, with the intention to create a communist base amongst the Gorkhas of Darjeeling. In 1987 the Gorkhaland movement took a violent turn under the leadership of Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) leader Shubhas Ghising, who destroyed many lives and several hundred crores of government property in Darjeeling. Since then, “Amra Bangali” has opposed the demand of Gorkhaland because it was a conspiracy to once again divide Bengal. Read the rest of this entry »
