Petrol pumps fuel fire fears
Posted by barunroy on January 14, 2008
Darjeeling, Jan. 13: The devastating fires in Burrabazar in Kolkata and Long View Tea Estate in Kurseong have got the residents of this tinderbox town worried while the district administration continues to overlook fire-safety concerns.
Darjeeling, with only 7-8 functional fire hydrants, has as many as four petrol pumps in the heart of the town, including one adjacent to the three-storeyed Old Super Market complex, which houses about 50 shops and offices.

Posted by barunroy on January 14, 2008
Kolkata, Jan. 13: Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today confirmed that the Centre had sounded his government on conferring the Bharat Ratna on Jyoti Basu and said his opinion was the same as Prakash Karat’s.
CPM general secretary Karat today iterated the party’s opposition to state awards.
“What (do) we have to with (the) Bharat Ratna? Our leaders do not accept state awards. This is our party’s stated stand,’’ he told reporters after the rally.
Asked if Delhi had got in touch with him over the award, Bhattacharjee initially said: “It’s a top secret.’’

Darjeeling, Jan. 13: Members of the parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs, which is currently scrutinising the constitutional amendment bill granting Sixth Schedule status to the hills, is expected to visit Darjeeling on February 6 and 7.
Even though no official announcement has been made, the hill unit of the BJP claimed that it has received the information from the party central leaders.
“I spoke to several leaders including Sushma Swaraj and Rajnath Singh and the team is scheduled to come for a two-day visit on February 6 and 7,” said G.S. Yonzone, the president of the BJP hill unit. He added that about 10-12 MPs are expected to be part of the visiting team. The panel consists of 30 odd members.
“On my visit to Delhi, I had told both the leaders that it was very important for the committee to visit the hills to know about the people’s opinion on the Sixth Schedule status,” said Yonzone.
