Kurseong, Jan. 15 :The political situation in the Darjeeling Hills is showing signs of warming up with the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s (GJM) renewed agitation against the proposed Sixth Schedule status and in support of a separate state. The GJM has assured to keep the movement non-violent, but make its point by forcing to shut down all the Central and the state government offices in the Darjeeling Hills. The move was initiated yesterday amidst the deployment of additional security forces by the district administration.
GJM supporters are picketing in front of the Central and state government establishments since yesterday, following which several offices remained closed. Meanwhile, stray incidents of clash between the GNLF and the GJM supporters in Mirik and in other places of the Hills have filtered through. Two GJM supporters were injured in a clash at Mirik. The GJM has also lodged an FIR against seven GNLF supporters, including the Mirik municipality chairman, LB Rai. Rai clarified that GJM supporters are creating nuisance. He further alleged that the GJM is trying to terrorise the people of Mirik with the help of outsiders. The district administration has imposed section 144 in areas close to the Darjeeling municipality.
