Subash Ghisingh’s silence could be fatal for GNLF

GNLF Procession

Subash Ghisingh is so utterly confident about the Sixth Schedule Amendment Bill being passed in this Session of the Parliament that he does not even want to be bothered about the revolution that seems to be gearing up against him. In fact, the buzz in the GNLF quarters is such that he is not even talking with his closest confidants. “Right now, he does not trust anyone, so everything has come to a grinding halt,” a source in the party said today. Thus, the GNLF hierarchy with Subash Ghisingh at the top is now effectively rendered immovable by the inactivity of Ghisingh himself. No one dares to ask him what to do when confronted with a major problem nor does Ghisingh himself instruct anyone on anything. So where is all this leading to? Ghisingh feels Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s remarks, protests or threats do not really matter [ultimately] hence reacting to them are unnecessary. Indeed, Subash Ghisingh has not spoken a word to the people he more than once said were like his children even when thousands left him to rally with Gorkha Janmukti Morcha. He has not even interacted with the Press and has in fact blockaded all information that should have flowed from a party still in power. Now, hypothetically if we accept that the Sixth Schedule Amendment Bill is passed and the Sixth Schedule Status levied upon the Darjeeling Hills, isn’t it his responsibility to interact with the people? Even if that is not so, isn’t it practical that instead of leaving his cadres, leaders and supporters to fend for themselves, he communicates with his own people, rallies his supporters and revitalize GNLF? The incident which occurred in Ghyabarie, near Kurseong, yesterday could very well be a common routine for the days to come. Where cornered by GJM the GNLF leaders and cadres would have no option but to react and to react violently. This would certainly be unfavorable in the eyes of the common populace and the GNLF leaders and cadres themselves finding isolated and vulnerable lose faith in Ghisingh’s leadership. If a seemingly majority of the populace has shifted their loyalties towards GJM in a period of not more than three months, wouldn’t the entire Hills be in GJM camp in another six months?Of repeated failed attempts to reach up to him, talk with him and interview him, I have realized that Subash Ghisingh is the most inaccessible of all leaders I have ever met. He doesn’t want to connect with his own people. His party leaders and cadres maintain that he cannot be disturbed or bothered. Still, it is upon him to decide upon the destiny of the Gorkha people, I am told. So, ultimately, Ghisingh must really know what he is doing or else he could very well be in the path of losing his own party and his people before even the Sixth Schedule Bill is discussed upon in the Parliament.

BJP trains statehood gun on Asok

Posted by barunroy on January 23, 2008

Darjeeling, Jan. 22: The BJP today lambasted Bengal urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya for maintaining that Gorkhaland was impossible and termed his statement “unconstitutional”.

“Every community in the country has the right to statehood as mentioned in the Constitution. Political parties should work to fulfil people’s aspirations, but Bhattacharya’s statement smacked of communalism,” said G.S. Yonzone, the president of the BJP (hill unit).

Some Things I must say!

Posted by barunroy on January 23, 2008

“Barun Roy is a traitor…..

Barun Roy is a pseudo Bengali…

We can forgive Gorkhas even when Gorkhaland is formed but not people like Barun Roy…”

The realities of politics cannot be understood completely as long as we do not achieve the ability to put things into greater perspective. And further, living beyond one’s own ideological allegiance and putting across one’s own thought devoid of personal malice, vendettas and motives - All in all, for people like me being honest to myself and to the rest of the world.

If you didn’t still get it let me put it this way: I am a journalist by profession, a writer by interest, a Gorkha by choice and a Bengali by blood. My racial, familial, professional and personal interest spectrum are so shared that I sometime feel confused myself. For instance, a couple of hundred hate mails knock at my inbox every week. Most asking me why I am so keen to serve the Gorkha interest? My humble reply that ‘it is my job’, brings further quaint remarks ‘How? Tumi Bangali, Are they paying you?’ Some even assume that I have simply turned away from my roots. Have I?  No, most certainly not. In fact, I have gone deep into my heritage and plucked a few morsel of sanity myself. But still questions do remain which I have to answer!

Can I still being a Bengali want to be a part of Gorkhaland? Can I achieve this without seemingly being unjust to the sentiments of my fellow Bengali brethrens? Can I also be honest to Gorkhas themselves when I say that I want Gorkhaland and that apart from my blood which is Bengali I am practically a Gorkha? Can I a journalist with responsibilities to my craft and profession declare openly that I am in favour of a separate statehood? Can I muster courage to call spade a spade and work to help the common populace prevail over Subash Ghisingh or Bimal Gurung or Madan Tamang?

Yes, to all, perhaps!
