Intellectuals concerned over Gorkhaland demand
Posted by barunroy on April 15, 2008
SILIGURI, April 14: Intellectuals of Siliguri today questioned the rationale behind the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha’s demand to include Siliguri and Dooars in the proposed Gorkhaland state. Apart from this, they expressed serious concern over Siliguri turning into a haven for the subversives. Mr Ashru Kumar Sikdar, a former professor of the North Bengal University, Mr Haren Ghosh, a noted academician and Mr Ananda Gopal Ghosh, professor of history, North Bengal University, brushed aside the demand for the inclusion of Siliguri town and Dooars in the proposed Gorkhaland state, branding it as absurd. “It is being orchestrated to create a divide between the Hills and the plains on ethnic lines, which is a dangerous trend and unjustified,” they opined. Mr Sikdar said that the demand for self-autonomy in the Darjeeling Hills comprising Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong sub-divisions was a century old. “The demand for a separate state comprising the three sub-divisions may have some justification. Yet, at no point of time, in the long history of the region, Siliguri and Dooars figured in the self-autonomy demand. History does not support such a demand.”
Corroborating this statement, Mr Haren Ghosh, said that even the Darjeeling Hills did not have a notable Nepali population until 1865. “The Lepchas, a distinct ethnic tribe, dominated the Hills in terms of population. In 1865 when tea estates came into being ethnic Nepalis began pouring into the Hills in large numbers from Nepal in search of jobs in the upcoming tea estates. The number further grew with the introduction of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in 1880. As far as Siliguri and Dooars are concerned ethnic Nepalis were negligible in number until 1950 when the Indo-Nepal friendship treaty was signed between the two governments. Even now, ethnic Nepali population is not more than 60,000 in Siliguri out of the roughly estimated population of 70 million,” Mr Ghosh added. Prof Ananda Gopal Ghosh of NBU expressed concern over distortion of history to suit certain demands, which cannot stand the objective historical scrutiny. [The Statesman]

The so called intellectuals of Siliguri may very well be from Bangladesh. If not, then certainly their roots are in Bangladesh. Everyone knows that Siliguri and Tripura are fully gobbled up by the Bangladeshis. They have come to occupy our land. We came with our land.

but it is time to find out the truth,to make us our path to achieve gorkhaland easily..
So here is a little history for all gorkhaland supportors.
After sixty three years of the occupation of the dajeeling by the British, there was a report called as Terai Settlement 1898 that deals with the classification, occupation, settlement of the land road, hat, bazaar , climate, ethnic composition etc of “the plain portion of the district of darjeeling locally known as the darjeeling terai” that is siliguri and its periphery of today. The Terai Settlement Report 1898, as per the then available record contains caste wise population as follows :-
Bhuimali and Mehter 1079
Bhutia 422
Brahman 630
Damai 108
Gharto 229
Gurung 1916
Kaibarta 329
Kami 630
Khambu 2773
Kachh 11,133
Lepcha 1024
Limbo 524
Mgar 1347
Munda 255
Murmi 1002
Newar 507
Oraon 4632
Rajput 514
Sarki 151
Sunur 101
Yakha 54
Buna 1270
Shaik 6301
These castes belongs to Nepali(Gorkha) and Adivasi community and they had formed the population of the Terai at the end of the nineteenth century.
But with the passage of time the dominat population has become minority and the community which were not in sigh at the time of preparation of the Report of Terai Settlement in 1898 has become majority and also the ruling community…..
SORRY GUYS I DONT KNOW THE HISTORY AND OF THESE PROFESSORS AND TO WHICH PARTY THEY ARE AFFILATED BUT I MUST SAY THEY SHOULD SEE THE HISTORY OF TERAI PROPERLY AND SAY WHO WERE immigrant in the tarai region.

since 1898 a lot of water has flown under the teesta bridge and it does not help to rake up history to judge which area belongs to whom . As for coming down from East Pakistan yes a sizeable number of the population did come down from East Pakistan and Punjab during the partition days. My family came to Siliguri in 1947 , a large part of the family had been annihilated by the Muslims. Among the people who migrated then large number of people like I.K. Gujral who went on to become the prime minister of this country. Baichung who is loved by Kolkatans and is the captain of India’s football belongs to an area which was a separate country until the mid-1970s. Does that make him any less Indian?
Frankly this blog is not positively productive. It is a forum where Bengalis insult “Gorkhas” and vice versa. I do not know the precedents of this man who is running this blog but his intentions cannot be good. Harsh words spoken, incitements etc cannot be the sign of maturity.
If there is going to be a Gorkhaland and if Siliguri is going to be part of that set up one has to build a bridge of confidence and unite bengalis, biharis, gorkhas , adivasis and everybody else.Right now it is as if it is gorkhas versus the rest. This situation seems bizzare especially for a person like me who have close family friends in the community and feel strange .

Denso there is no need to vent your frustrations on Barun or on this blog. This blog has done a great service to you and to us. We are all debating here and not on the roads. I think Barun has done a great job and must be appreciated and more so being a Bengali himself.

I was out for a while and am back now. It is good to find Beacon Online as hot as ever and the discussion still intense though not to much constructive progress.
Denso: Please don’t blame Barun or this Blog for anything. We all love it, Nepalese, Bengalese alike.
Rest of the Friends, lets now try to be more constructive and try to accept our own mistakes as well and be progressive.
