Kathmandu, June 7 (PTI) The Nepali Congress today proposed the name of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala for Nepal’s first President after the Maoists renounced their claim over the post amid the ongoing hard bargaining over government formation in the country.
“As Koirala led the country to this point, successfully handling the People’s Movement of 2006, completing the Constituent Assembly elections as well as bringing the Maoists to the political mainstream, he deserves the post of the president,” Nepali Congress general secretary Rambaran Yadav told reporters here.
However, the octogenarian India-born has been opposed by the Maoists who are set to lead the next government amid concerns over his age and health.
Koirala is too frail for the post due to his deteriorating health conditions, said chairman of Madhesi People’s Rights Forum Upendra Yadav told reporters.
“We should not punish some one who needs oxygen just to walk by making him president of the country,” Yadav whose party has a strength of 52 seats in the Assembly said.
The Maoists, who emerged as the biggest party in the April 10 election, winning 220 seats in the 601-member Constituent Assembly, have staked claim to lead the next government.
However, under pressure from the Nepali Congress (NC), the second biggest party with 110 seats, and the Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist Leninist), the Maoists gave up their claim over the post of President. PTI

But lets dont b on these matters lets make a constitution first.

what I strongly oppose most to Prachand and bhattarai is calling Gorkhas mercenaries. Thus they have cleanly chopped off Nepal’s heritage of the origin of the Gorkha soldiers of whom countless books and accolades have been written. They have proved themselves to be just another Kathmandu kind of Nepalese and are going to turn others into the same culture. They will turn their Gorkhas into personal guards and personal army. No problem except noone is going to write about them anymore.
Besides the kind of history and men Gorkhas have seen and worked with outside for generations, Prachand and Nepalese policians will not be able to provide the kind of leadership that the Gorkhas look upto.

Isn’t it a shame to find Indian origin people ruling the roost in NEPAL ? ANYWAY, whose country is NEPAL ??? I ask whose country is NEPAL ??? How come there are so many Yadavs and Muslims in Nepal??? Many people from Bengal wants the Treaty of 1950 be scrapped…..I , being a Gorkhali also want the same…I believe this will atleast mitigate the problem of illegal Indian influx into Nepal and ufff….look at illegal Indians controlling the economy of Nepal??? Almost, 90% of Nepal’s economy is controlled by Indians…So/who is to blame..??? AB BILAP GARNU BHAYAK KEYE UPAY DEKHDINA….? LU…NEPAL SAKYO…!

ms jyoti says that Prachanda cannot provide good leadership in Nepal.. NEPAL bhhanee desh ta sakino attyo ,ke ko leadership ko kura???
June 8, 2008 at 7:58 pm
Its all a matter of leadership and a matter of having a second rung of leaders that people can look up to and follow. If we only have old doddering folks clinging on to the reins/kursi…be it in India or elsewhere in the sub-continent the young folks will never join politics and the thinking and outlook of a country will remain stagnant. Poltics like industry needs young blood…So lets hope the young get a chance…soon. I heard even Koirala is an India born person…so by virtue of birth he too is an Indian…as for industry and business don’t just look at it from the point of view of one community dominating it is also that they are employment generators…

Prabhu Chawla managed to get statements from Prachand which are now on record and Prachand will have to adhere to them.

Pl put across one straight question to me and if I can I will try to answer it.
As for Prachand being a good leader or not, he has to prove it and if he does prove to be good i will be the first person to acknowledge it. At the moment he is only talking. But yes he is transforming. Good for him. Regards

can someone upload the video of prabhu chawla interviewing prachanda in seedhi baat
i missed it….
June 9, 2008 at 10:06 pm
You didn’t miss much…Prachanda said he is not asking for the post of Pres & Vice Pres & PM…that is disinformation…that he is still talking about how power will be shared.
Prabhu Chawla asked asinine questions on whether NOW the Maoists will allow for a probe into the palace massacre? As if Prachanda cares…
Mr God Chawla also asked how he should address Prachanda BHAVI Prez or Bhavi PM??? What does he think of the BJP saying -ve things about the Maoists coming to power and the death of the ONLY Hindu state?
He also talked about how he proposes to induct Rehabilitate the Mao Army…all those that are fit will be inducted into the army, police and the para military. The Prez who ever that will be will not be the supreme commander in chief of the army…it will be the Defence Minister.
The Army too he says he will have to work upon since they are used to 230 yrs + of being loyal to the king…etc etc…
Nepal will have good relations with India & China and NO he will not allow any anti- China India forces to use Nepal’s dharti for any nefarious activities.

Poor jwalahang first of all i want to say that madhesis are not indians so first of all stop your narrow view of nationship.Because we belirve that they have equal rights in our country as we have. And i warn you that dont ever think of sikkimisation in Nepal.Ani arko kura jaba samma nepali rahanchhan Nepal kailai sididaina.
Dont ever give nonsense comments to our national leaders. And over all what to comment in the place where most of you have forgotten your roots for the sake of facilities you have got under foreigner belts. Tesaile saathi ho aafno sataha nabirsanu kun din dhotile timiharulai chai sidaula. Ani tyo bela ma hamlai samjhanu we r ready to help.

ref to yr comment no 15 to my comment no 7. I was not referring to Prachanda’s leadership as a politician. What I meant that the kind of army history and standards of leadership of men the Gorkha soldiers have seen and respected down the ages will not be matched by Prachand or Bhattarai. There is still one helluva diffrence between a ‘bullet to ballot’ PM and other PMs of the world. There will be a vacuum which will lead to the deterioration of a Gorkha’s qualities. And that is a fact.
