FROM THE STATESMAN

By Sudipta Chanda

The Coordination Committee, which is the largest platform of tea workers’ unions in north Bengal, has decided to launch an indefinite strike in the industry from 18 August. The decision comes following the three rounds of inconclusive debate on workers’ wages and other demands as proposed by the unions.

It was learnt that the Coordination Committee would intimate the industry about its decision officially on 28 July and then hold convention and campaign programmes from 30 July to muster support for the strike programme. Already aware of the CC’s decision, the industry captain feels that such a movement would hurt the already ailing tea industry.
