Kathmandu, July 24 : There were minor demonstrations in Nepal against the newly elected Vice President Parmananda Jha after he took his oath of office and secrecy in Hindi.

According to Nepalnews, student organisations affiliated with different parties staged demonstrations today. They demanded that Jha apologize for taking oath in a “foreign language”.

Residents of Gajuri in Dhading district also barred vehicles from plying on the road by imposing transportation strike.

They said that this was a matter of grave concern, putting at risk the sovereignty of the country.

In Butwal, youths chanted slogans against Jha. They blocked traffic on major roads and intersections. There were reports of protests in Makwanpur, Rupandehi, Nawalparasi, Dadelhura and Tahahun also.

On Wednesday, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav, clad in the Nepal costume, had taken the oath of office and secrecy in Nepali. However, when he administered the oath of office to Vice President Jha, who was clad in a dress many identify with Indian parliamentarians, the latter preferred to take it in Hindi.

According to an independent statistics, only 0.05 per cent of people living in Terai speak Hindi. The majority of the people there speak Bhojpuri, Maithali, Avadhi and other local dialects.

Yo ta bhaye na…as a Madhesi accepted by Nepal the 1st Vice Prez should have honoured his motherland by taking the oath in his mother tongue.

Creating chaos over what he wore and what language he spoke in is all radical and backward thinking. The content of his words and his sincerity is what is more important. In India the parliament session was conducted in English and Hindi. Oaths , etc area also conducted in English. IT DOES NOT undermine their being Indians or loyalty to India.

Nepal has to move forward not get stuck over such issues.

There are people who talk and write only in Nepali and have nothing much to actually say. There are others who have much more to contribute even if they speak in English which is a global language today and does not indicate any British alliance anymore.

Manmohan Singh wears his turban, Lalu wears his dhoti, the Sn Indians wear their lungis.

So If Jha wants to wear his kurta pyjama, i think it is okay.

Nepal has to learn to get more liberal minded.

Why did Prachand give his interview to Prabhu Chawla in Hindi if that is the case? Why was he not condemned for that?

Nepal pl move forward and do not get stuck between a pyajama or a sural OR a language which is also spoken in Madhes

AArdee you are right, Jha spoke in his mother tongue-Hindi. The national language is Nepali. Just like in India the national language is Hindi. But many cannot speak it fluently, as their mother tongues are vast and neither are they forced to. But that does not make anyone less Indian.

  13. J T M said

National language and mother tongues are separate things. At the recent UPA Vote meet, the reps from Bodoland and nagaland spoke in English and were able to convey perfectly. If they were forced to speak in Hindi it would have been totally unfair as they would not have been able to get their message across.
    Freedom of language

Nepal should try to stop imitating China. They speak in Chinese all the time and carry their interpreters all the time. God knows what they say and what the interpreter censors out and translates.

  15. aardee said

VP should have taken the oath in Nepali to underscore that he being a Madhesi is NEPALESE to the core.

I do not deny and have not denied that but there are larger matters in Nepal to worry about and people should not get stuck on this one. I am refereeing to the demonstartions and some sparks of violence follwing this one.
