“I am very much in favour of Gorkhaland”, Dawa Narbula

Posted by barunroy on July 26, 2008

One on One with Dawa Narbula, Member of Parliament, Darjeeling Constituency

A BEACON ONLINE EXCLUSIVE

Interviewed by Barun Roy

Question: The Gorkha Janmukti Morch is demanding for an early tripartite meeting between the Central Government, West Bengal Government and the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, you had stated a few days earlier that after meeting Mrs Sonia Gandhi, she had assured you that a tripartite meeting will be held soon. What is the update on that and will you be calling upon her to discuss on the issue again?

Answer: I will be leaving for Darjeeling to access the situation. I will also be holding a meeting with the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leaders and discuss on the Tripartite Meeting between the Central Government, West Bengal Government and the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha. I have met the Honourable Chairman of the UPA, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and she has resolved to call the Tripartite Meeting as soon as possible.

Question: How soon will the meeting take place?

Answer:The date has not yet been fixed but it will be held soon. First we will have to take care of the situation back in Darjeeling Hills and wait for things to return back to normal as soon as possible.

Question: The Pradesh Congress Committee President Mr. Priyaranjan Das Munshi had almost a month ago declared of Congress Party’s negative stand on Gorkhaland. Does this also mean that the AICC hold the same view? Is Indian National Congress against Gorkhaland?

Answer: I do not want to comment on that. I am however on the side of the people and will work for their aspirations.

Question: Does that mean that you are in favour of Gorkhaland and you stand by it?

Answer: Yes, I am very much in favour of Gorkhaland and I stand by it.

This interview ended abruptly as the Darjeeling MP refused to answer any further questions without giving any reasons.

The unanswered questions were:

  1. What is your comment on the prevailing political situation in Darjeeling Hills?
  2. Will you resign from your post and the party if what Priya Ranjan Das Munshi says ‘Indian National Congress is against the formation of Gorkhaland’ resonates from New Delhi also?
  3. How many times have you raised the issue of Gorkhaland at the floor of the house in the Parliament?
  4. According to Government of India Members of Parliament Local Area Development Funds Division you have received 12 installments of Rs. 50 Lakhs each since 2002-2003. The Total amount paid is Rs. 6 Crores. Further the Cumulative Expenditure Sheet (Since 1993) of the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Division, Government of India, of the Rs. 26.05 Crores entitled, Rs. 24.05 Crores was released by the Government of India. The percent of finance spent as shown to the Government of India was 94. 58 with 1.67 Crores remain unspent. Could you please clarify the following:
  • How many projects were initiated under these schemes?
  • On what stages are these projects presently?
  • Where were the projects initiated?

It is good news that Dawa Narbula is in favour of Gorkhaland. But didn’t Dawa Narbula win the election on the ‘Gorkhaland plank’? Why is he having such a problem trying to come out openly in the favour of Gorkhaland. Sadly, for him his party is the one who might never allow Gorkhaland to happen. Congress is worse than CPIM. At least the CPIM comes out in the open and says that they are against you…the Congress will offer their support and then stab you in your back. Hope Dawa Narbula does not do any such thing. My personal opinion is that he has failed to be a good MP for us. I hope next time we send someone who is better committed to the people and not the party.

Dawa Narbula has come out in support of Gorkhaland only because he was pressurised to do so. He isn’t our representative but a stooge of the Congress who was elected only by default…through Ghising’s blessings.

If it had been me…or anyone else for that matter… instead of Narbula, I would have been able to extract this empty promise from Sonia Gandhi. This is no big deal, Mr. good-for-nothing MP.

If he claims to stand by Gorkhaland, why didn’t he ever raise his bloody voice? Why can’t he comment on Das Munshi’s bullying verdict about Gorkhaland, dismissing us like he would a pestering mosquito?

Also, Narbula, quite shamelessly, replies that he shall wait for things to normalise in Darjeeling. Why can’t he issue statements like ‘I am saddened…there must be an investigation…the culprits must be booked…and etc.’ To me, this only reveals his lack of sympathy for his agitating masses.

Why did he refuse to answer any further questions? No doubt he felt that he was being cornered. He knows that he is incompetent and perhaps, corrupt too. I’m sure his pockets have been lined with much of the money that was meant for us, not to speak of the crores that may have landed in his lap after he voted for the UPA.

Barun Roy must force him to answer the very legitimate questions that he has lined up for Narbula. After all, isn’t a political representative answerable to his electors?

Finally, being a Buddhist that he is, Narbula must weigh, on his religious scale, the good and bad karmas that he has performed. During this tenure as MP, he has earned enough bad karma by his silence to spend the rest of his days in penance. Even that may not be enough to cancel out his bad karma.

Aloo MP …He wud be better if he returned back to his business of collecting rents of his buildings in Pradhan Nagar(Near North Bengal Clinic)

he must be intoxicated by Paisa (MP fund)..With MP election coming closer..he must be dreaming of getting reelected from Darjeeling..NOw watch his moves he will try to be as careful as speculator and brooker in Share Market..i bet!

Haha……. those unanswered question is too difficult for him to answer.

Unanswered Questions: Anwers to which went through in Mr. Narbula’s mind but he didn’t speak. They are as follows:

Ans 1. I cannot give an honest answer to this question or else I won’t be allowed to enter Hills.

Ans 2. I haven’t won election with the agenda of GL but with the support of Congress Party. Mr. Munshi and Mr. Pranab Mukerjee hold a much higher stature than me in the Party and with their support and trust on me only I am an MP now. And I know Congress Party is not supporting GL.

    Ans 3. None

    Ans 4. (a) I don’t remember
    (b) & (c) When I don’t remember these schemes, how can I remember all this. But I do remember how much my personal gains are from these project which I cannot disclose.

Dawa Norbu is the worst MP that Darjeeling has had. I think the most corrupted too. He has taken lots of money from the members of the Trade Union etc… As a lawyer he was unsuccessful, so he cunningly took a short cut to politics to make quick buck. Today I am sure that he is regretting that he is a MP because he is “cornered ” like a dog. As a fellow Buddhist, I feel shame that he is practicing the same religion.I predict that very soon his house will be bunrned like others.

The recent acts violence of the GJM aginst its former partners in the GNLF sets at rest all doubt about the real agenda of the GJM. The GJM basically wants power to be consolidated in its hands and does not believe in democracy. Leave aside any other opinion or view regarding the composition of the hill state, it does not even want any competition from its former party GNLF.

These power hungry people masquerading as leaders of the hill people and their goondas are supposed to provide leadership to the proposed new seperate state. We should beware of such elements before they grow big.

The hill people certainly deserve better than such criminals and lumpens.

This man is the Greatest FOX ,Darjeeling has ever seen.He did nothing for the hills.Even a paisa from his MP Fund was not spent in Darjeeling. I hear whenever there was a request for fund, he excused himself by saying that the matter must be placed before,” plain ko sathi haru”. There s another arrogant Fox roaming in the hills who always boast abt his small tea garden n few buildings which he built under the patronage of then CM. Bichara….he had hoped to become MP but lady luck did not favour him. We need to support and rely on dedicated souls like RB but, unfortunately that sort of enlightened reasoning is yet to evolve in Darjeeling. The credentials of the present leadership is well known. ..sshhh…….They r talking abt three tier panchayati raj in Darjeeling. God knows wat has happened to their…..&@??!! An innocent rots in the jail without trial and yet he never speaks for him. I guess he fears that he might usurp him like he did to mahamahim chaure. Cheap politics, yeh !!
