Asserting that Tawang is an integral part of India, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu has said China’s claim over the tract was untenable.

“Tawang is an integral part of India. China’s claim over it is untenable,” the Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister said.

“There is no question of a border dispute with China on its claim over Tawang,” Khandu, who was leading a delegation that met Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama at the headquarters of Tibetan government-in-exile, said after the meeting.

The Chief Minister said there were no discussions on China’s claim over Tawang with the Dalai Lama. The delegation, including Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister J Garlin, PWD Minister Chohana Main and MP Kiren Rijiju, expressed unhappiness over the situation prevailing in Tibet. Khandu said he was here to express solidarity with Tibetan leadership over the recent events in Tibet. He said they have come to invite the Dalai Lama to Arunachal Pradesh. “Since I am a Buddhist, I have come to invite my guru (the Dalai Lama). He has agreed to visit the State sometime in November or December,” he said. [Inset: Map of Tawang. Photo by Kolkata Birds]

Asked about the 90-minute meeting Khandu had with the Tibetan leader, Dalai Lama’s secretary and spokesman Tenzin Takhla informed it was a “courtesy call”. Khandu and others later attended a banquet hosted by the Tibetan government-in-exile which was attended by its prime minister Samdhong Rinpoche, Tibetan speaker T T Karma and his deputy Dolma Gyari.

Meanwhile, Arunachal Pradesh Governor General (Retd) J J Singh said both India and China were trying to resolve the boundary issue in a pragmatic manner. “The issue is being discussed at the highest level and we are expecting to resolve the issue in a pragmatic manner,” the Governor said.

The Governor said both the countries were currently engaged in talks to resolve the boundary question and had signed the ‘Political Parameters and Guiding Principles’ to resolve the border issue.

China claims 90,000 sq km of land in Arunachal Pradesh, which borders Bhutan and Tibet.

“Our relationship with China is improving after the visit of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. Our aim is to sort out the problem (boundary question) to ensure a peaceful border with our immediate neighbour,” Singh said. Earlier, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee had said India would not give up any part of the country that regularly send its elected representatives to Parliament.

Earlier Arunachal Pradesh Government being concerned over developments in Tibet and have urged the sizeable Buddhist population in the State to maintain calm. “We are concerned about what is happening in Tibet … we have ensured that calm prevails in the state,” Chief Minister Khandu remarked.

….claiming 90,000 sq. km land???… what a joke. After gulping Tibet without a burp they are now eyeing Nepal and India. Learning from the history the Chinese can never be trusted. Thankfully India is now finally awoken to the chinese activities on the border and have now started building roads, modern bunkers, communication network etc.
    Hindi – Chini bhai bhai???….what a load of s…..!!!!!

    Raja just outa curiosity…
Actually why does China claim Tawang as its territory ?
Wats the significance of going ballistic after pontiffs visit ?
Does Dalai Lama s visit approve n seal Tawang as an Integral part of India ?
    ……

regarding your last point, it does….India claims its sovereignty over Arunachal by making this symbolic gesture..which is, it can send its guest anywhere it wants to within the territory under its sovereign control…
the veiled diktat to Dalai Lama that he not make any political pronouncements is in keeping with what India expects of refugees (the word used for the pontiff is ‘honored guest’ but technically he is a refuge) and that is they not engage in any politiking…or do or say things that impacts foreign policy…

    Is it ?
I thought Tawang originally belonged to Tibet !
My reasoning was based on the fact that Dalai Lama used to appoint the head Lama of Tawang monastery.Had it been so then ,there s smething fishy in the mess.
Patley do ya believe in so called reincarnation ?
Through media I cme to knw ppl in Tawang calling Dalai Lama God.
Is it possible? If then y did he flee to India through Tawang instead of proving his Godly prowess ?

of course i don’t believe in reincarnation for the following reasons:
    (i) it is not scientific since the process of choosing reincarnates are at best arbitrary and influenced by a whole lot of mumbo jumbo…and really not open to scientific scrutiny…..
at the moment reincarnation has become politicized with a number of reincarnate claims being thrown by different sects with their own agendas (all of them seem to claim that their ‘choice’ is the legitimate one)…sometimes reincarnation is also absurd like in the claim about steven seagall being the reincarnate of some rimpochee…

(ii) secondly when a child is chosen through a process over which he has no control you are denying his basic human rights…the freedom to choose a career, vocation or even religion is not there…..
but i don’t mean this is any disrespect to the thousands of devout votaries for whom reincarnation is a sacrosanct article of faith….

    - you mean to say this is even ‘absurder’ than the general absurd ? :-) Why ?

( well, this is certainly getting curioser and curioser… he he )

    just to rule the roost.
I personally believe Tibetans sud keep the religion aside n new gen leadership sud come affront to further their cause.

Well, Amfoi, I don’t think ‘buddhism’ as a religion should ever be kept aside….. however some administrative aspects of the Tibetan form of Buddhism is sure to change over the years…. whether some people like it or not.

the chinese are claiming that the Dalai Lama was coerced by India into visiting Tawang…

Just because it has been politicized doesn’t make the phenomenon any less sacred, if not veritable.

And you mean anything that is not in the realm of science is necessarily false? On the contrary I guess you need to increase the perimeter of your knowledge with Dr. Ian Stevenson’s research works, if at all scientific proof is everything for you.

  13. patleybaskounpad said

i knew someone would bring in Stevenson here…although if you have actually read him instead of just quoting him, you will realize that Stevenson’s research (i) cut across all cultures and geographies and was not done with the intention of scientifically validating the Tibetan concept of reincarnation and secondly (ii) his conclusions on reincarnation was just based on some study of people who made these claims…he did not provide any conclusive, verifiable theory …
and lastly why not increase the perimeter of your knowledge by reading some Richard Wisman..

    ————————————————————-
    Change is inevitable.
As buddhism spread into cultures with existing religious beliefs, it incorporated local deities and religious practices into the system. For example Buddhism followed by majority of Bhotes(sikkimese,) Tamang, Sherpa, lepcha, Dukpa, Yolmo etc. is also Tibetan Buddhism but fall in the school called Ningmapa. The Tibetans (e.g. Dalai Lama) on the other hand are referred to as Gelugpa. There are two more: Kagyupa and sakyapa.
If you visit a monastery, the way three deities- gurun remporche, Buddha, chyangrashi (Just like bhrama, bishnu and siva) are arranged you can make out the differences in schools of Buddhism. Ningmapa treat Guru remporche as second Buddha and he is in the middle position in the altar, while Tibetans keep Buddha in the middle.
Gyalugpa monks do not marry. Ningmapa monks can. These are all changes suited to social circumstances.
Even the Tibetan Buddhism as a whole falls under bhajrayana sect, the other two sects are Theravada and vajrayana. Zen, Pure Land and Nichiren etc. are vajrayana.
These sects and schools are testimony of change, which you are talking about. It will change further no doubt about that. There is an interesting goddess in Buddhism that has evolved over the year-tara devi (green tara). She is said to be the Buddhist manifestation of parvati.

  15. patleybaskounpad said

i think the biggest change in Tibetan Buddhism will be effected by its Geographical displacement…with more and more western people converting to it and bringing with them (besides their dollars) a more inquiring, investigative mindset, one can expect the faith to loosen from the shackles of the feudal darkness in which much of its esoteric philosophies were developed..

  16. patleybaskounpad said

please read ‘exoteric’ instead of ‘esoteric’ since the Tibetan buddhism belongs to the former branch which holds that the ultimate state of the buddhahood is ineffable….

Any area within the Great wall of China is chinese…beyond the wall…..everyone’s guess. If Tawang is within the great wall then its in Chinese territory otherwise its again everyone’s guess.
BTW…what’s the CPIM’s official stand on the Tawang issue??? I hope they haven’t mentioned that it belongs to China?

Chinese are communists. “Religion is a poison” (courtesy: seven years in tibet) for them.

Although historically, the seed of Buddhism in China is said to have sowed by Ashoka the great.

Thailand, Srilanka, Burma and other southern Asian countries follow Theravada Buddhism. Majority of Koreans and japs from Mahayana school of thoughts.

Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan and north-eastern India (sikkim, Darjeeling, ladakh, arunachal pradesh etc.) belong to Vajrayana School.
Some communities in West/south India have inclination to Theravada Buddhism, said to be due to B R Ambedker’s (who is the pioneer along with Iyothee Thass, G Reddy etc.) proximity with Srilankan monks in his prime.
