FROM THE STATESMAN

KURSEONG, Oct 12: Despite the GJMM instruction for residents to wear traditional attire as part of the ongoing cultural agitation until 7 November, many people have not been following the instruction.

To encourage people to dress in traditional clothing, the GJMM women’s wing has decided to organise programmes in many places of Kurseong to bring awareness of Gorkha attire and cultural activities.

They organised a “road show” programme in Kurseong town today where they convinced people regarding the importance of wearing traditional attire. The GJMM women’s wing will continue to organise such shows. The GJMM women’s wing, central committee member from Kurseong, Mrs Prabha Chettri said that besides this “road-show” they will also campaign door-to-door so everyone will be convinced to wear traditional clothing in order to strengthen the Gorkhaland demand.

She said besides the general public who are being requested to wear traditional clothing, the members and cadres of the GJMM party must wear Gorkha traditional attire. If cadres are found not wearing it, their party membership will be suspended for three months.

As for journalists, she said they have neither been requested nor told to wear the traditional attire and it is their decision to wear it or not, she added.

She said people should understand that the main reason for the programme is to attract tourists as well as to bring awareness among the people and the government that there is an ocean of differences between the Gorkha community and the rest of Bengal on the basis of culture, geography and language.

She said the government should consider the demand of Gorkhaland under the constitution of India and added that people should respect the different culture of Darjeeling Hills and should proudly wear their respective traditional attire.
