Thy name is Sikkim!

I enjoy what Gerda Lerner, a renowned historian once quoted “What we do about history matters? The often repeated saying that those who forget the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them has a lot of truth in it. But what are ‘the lessons of history’? The very attempt at definition furnishes ground for new conflicts. History is not a recipe book; past events are never replicated in the present in quite the same way. Historical events are infinitely variable and their interpretations are a constantly shifting process. There are no certainties to be found in the past. As a toddler we are here to comprehend the beauty of those immemorial days that has lived up to its days.”
Often repeated words that history should never be repeated but re-created, I personally believe we have come to that relaxation now we can have local writers brushing up with some history exemplar, pushing behind those gloomy days of lactiveness. There were times in my academic life when the approach on this subject was ridden off with yarn and skimp. History should never be looked upon simply as long-drawn-out pages of the times of yore. The beauty lies in exploring the drift world of historical impudence, though we are left with much work of uncertainties, yet more we uncover, most magnificence it further lays. REGIONAL PAROCHIALISM WILL BE OPPOSED: BIMAN BASU
Posted by barunroy on November 2, 2008
FROM PEOPLE’S DEMOCRACY
PEOPLE’S DEMOCRACY IS COMMUNIST PARTY OF INDIA MARXISTS’ MOUTHPIECE
BY B PRASHANT
SENIOR CPI (M) leader Biman Basu spoke about the urgent need to contain and condemn regional parochialism. ‘Ugly deeds of regional and linguistic chauvinism are a terrible danger to the very notion and practice of national integrity and unity’ was how Biman Basu would put it.
‘The whole concept,’ he added, ‘of Indian citizenship itself is now faced with a challenge of grim proportions, as seen in the prejudiced drive overwhelmed with brutalisation against certain sections of the people in Mumbai This must not be allowed to go unhindered. People of every section of the social fabric must come forward in strong condemnation of the deeds being perpetrated. Political parties of every kind of ideology and political leanings should have the courage to condemn publicly such parochial acts of commission.
In this connection, Biman Basu referred to two forms of separatist movements taking place in Bengal. Up north in Darjeeling, the anarchic Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) was busy overwriting car number plates and altering signboard lettering, often being met with a different sort of separatism in the dooars and the plain lands. The Darjeeling district Left Front has called for unity of the people and for opposing all attempts at dividing up Bengal. Down south, a demand has been raised by interested quarters about slicing of three districts – Bankura, Purulia, and Midnapore west – from Bengal and having them form part of the neighbouring state of Jharkhand. ‘PEOPLE OF DARJEELING SHALL REBUFF THE SEPARATISTS’
Posted by barunroy on November 2, 2008
FROM PEOPLE’S DEMOCRACY
PEOPLE’S DEMOCRACY IS COMMUNIST PARTY OF INDIA MARXISTS’ MOUTHPIECE
BY B PRASHANT
In between looking after the T & CP (the Town and Country Planning Act of 1979) that governs vital building activities in Bengal, and closing the gaps in the GAP (the Ganga Action Plan of the union government), the busy urban development minister of Bengal LF government, Ashok Bhattacharya managed a slot of time to speak to People’s Democracy at the Muzaffar Ahmad Bhavan on the latest Darjeeling developments. The minister has a uniquely intimate knowledge of the district having been associated with the Darjeeling CPI(M) from the late 1960s.
(Q) Why would you dub the Darjeeling imbroglio as separatist as well as anarchist?
(A) When some people identify Bengal as their burning ghat, one would dare say that the target is just that, to make Bengal rip and burn while the dans macabre is executed. The long term aim is to ensure that Darjeeling is carved away from Bengal and set up as a separate state. On the other hand, these separatist elements would militate against all kinds of development and then mournfully sing about Darjeeling having been allowed to suffer in the backwaters of underdevelopment. The game plan itself makes us call the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) and its running mates separatists as well as anarchists. Read the rest of this entry »

FROM THE TELEGRAPH

Guwahati, Nov. 1: The army today told the Prime Minister it had intercepted a message from Calcutta a week before the October 30 Assam blasts that said: “Attack Guwahati.”
At an evening meeting at Guwahati airport, the army also told Manmohan Singh it had known about the impending terror strikes in western Assam towns for six weeks and had tried to prevent them.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi, who heads the state’s unified command that includes the army, corroborated this at the meeting with Singh who made a short trip to Guwahati today.
Lt Gen. B.S. Jaswal, GOC, 4 Corps, told Singh the army had received “non-specific” information on September 17 about possible strikes in Guwahati, Barpeta Road and Kokrajhar, according to state minister Bharat Narah.
Gogoi admitted his government knew all of this but did not anticipate the scale of the blasts that killed 81 people and injured over 300 in these three places and Bongaigaon.
The government today formed a special team, headed by inspector-general of police (special task force) R. Chandranathan, to probe the blasts and report within 30 days.
The police detained three persons, including the suspected owners of a car and a motorbike used in the blasts. The third detainee was a young man whose address tallied with that on the application for a mobile connection that was used to send yesterday’s text message claiming responsibility for the attacks.
However, the suspect’s face did not match the photograph on the application, suggesting someone else may have used his name and address. Read the rest of this entry »
