FROM THE STATESMAN

KurseongSiliguri, Jan. 13: Police in Kurseong have arrested five persons in connection with the 2 January Kurseong court hostilities against the alleged murderers of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leader Subodh Pradhan at Rohini on the night of 31 December.

According to police, the arrested persons are Subash Rai of Kurseong, Pramod Chettri of Lower Sirubari, Rohini, Robin Singh of Lower Dumaram Busty, Bijay Thapa of Singel Tea Estate and Devendra Subba of Ranikoop Naya Bazaar; Kurseong.

The arrested persons were produced in the additional chief judicial magistrate court, Kurseong, and later remanded in to jail custody. According to court officials, the next hearing on the case would be on 27 January. The five have been charged under Sections 147,148,149,341,353,186,323,325,326,307,427 and 507 of the Indian Penal Code.

The Kurseong  SDPO, Mr Rakesh Singh, said that the five people were arrested last night. “They were arrested for attacking the five accused persons in the GJM leader murder case, at the Kurseong Court. He also added that police were conducting more raids at several places.”

The GJM supporters brought out a rally in Kurseong  town following the arrests. They demonstrated in front of the ACJM Court and Kurseong Police station demanding the release of the arrested persons. All business establishments downed shutters for hours in Kurseong  from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

Meanwhile, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) general secretary, Mr Roshan Giri, threatened ‘a vigorous agitation’ in the Darjeeling hills and the plains if the district administration acted on its threat of arresting the party leader, Mr Pradip Pradhan, in connection with the Rohini and Kurseong  court incidents. “Mr Pradhan is innocent. He was not at the spot when the people indulged in arson in spontaneous reaction to the lynching of a prominent GJM leader. The district police have implicated him in a false case. If he is arrested we would resort to demonstration all over the Hills and the plains,” Mr Giri said.

Just noticed this, was wondering if its normal to be slapped with a dozen IPC sections. Anyway nobody is above law and the guilty should be punished however I’m a bit sceptical about the role of police in this incident. After the murder at Rohini…the subsequent mele could have been prevented and the houses could have been saved from arson had the police been competent. The second case of incompetence comes when the murder accused are lynched at the court premises. Mr. Tamta cooly claims that police are depressed. How ridiculous!
