FROM PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Siliguri, Jan 25: Vowing to continue its movement peacefully till Gorkhaland was realised, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) today said it will begin collecting&apostea tax&aposin Darjeeling Hills from March seven and work for an auction centre in the Hills itself.
From March seven, Darjeeling tea packets would have&aposmade in Gorkhaland&aposmarking instead of West Bengal, GJM General Secretary Roshan Giri told PTI.
The planters would not have to bear extra burden as the tax, paid to the government of West Bengal so far, would have to be diverted to the GJM fund against proper receipt and the collected money would be used for the development of Darjeeling Hills, Giri said.
The GJM leader demanded setting up of a Tea Auction Centre in the hills itself instead of the plains.
Asserting there would be no let-up in the movement demanding permission to hold rallies in Dooars region of Jalpaiguri district”to unite the Gorkhas and Adibasis in the foothills,” Giri said, adding CPI(M) with the help of police and administration was creating problem in the area.
“The Marxists with the help of police are throttling democracy by not allowing GJM to carry on its political activities in Dooars region,”he said. Read the rest of this entry »

FROM TIMES OF INDIA
By Suman Chakraborti
KOLKATA: Renewable energy is all set to be used in the tea industry to reduce manufacturing costs and maintain ecological balance in the
Darjeeling Hills, Dooars and Assam. The Tea Board of India and West Bengal Green Energy Development Corporation (WBGEDC) have jointly decided to prepare a package, to be submitted to the Centre.
WBGEDC managing director S P Gonchoudhuri said they held a meeting with tea board officials and several tea associations to discuss adoption of green energy in tea gardens. “We and the tea board will prepare a plan, which will be submitted to the Centre. The package will seek to reduce existing levels of energy consumption to maintain the eco-system of the Hills,” he said.
Indian Tea Association secretary-general Monojit Dasgupta said they were very interested in using renewable energy sources in the tea industry. “The use of solar energy in the industry was planned earlier, too, but the usage cost was high. Now, there are subsidy schemes available for these energy sources,” he said.
Gonchoudhuri said the eco-system of the Dooars, Assam and Darjeeling is being affected due to deforestation and pollution caused by tea factories. “Besides, the cost of manufacturing tea should also be reduced. Solar, bio-fuel and micro-hydel energy could be effectively used,” he said. Read the rest of this entry »

FROM TIMES OF INDIA
By Pinak Priya Bhattacharya
JALPAIGURI: Intelligence agencies are worried over reports that Bhutan Maoists have extended support to the Gorkhaland movement in the Darjeeling.
Hills, spearheaded by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM). Under the circumstances, it is being feared that the region might witness acts of extreme violence.
According to Intelligence reports, the Bhutan Communist Party (Marxist-Leninist-Maoist) has been regularly keeping in touch with a section of GJM leaders. The party has reportedly assured GJM leaders of extending all possible support to the statehood movement.
The two armed wings of BCP (M-L-M) Bhutan Tiger Force and United Revolutionary Front of Bhutan are keeping in touch with some GJM leaders and have assured to help them out if the movement takes a violent turn. The two outfits are active in southern Bhutan, and their help to Gorkhaland supporters in the Dooars can pose serious law and order problems.
GJM general secretary Roshan Giri, however, rubbished such fears. “There is absolutely no question of Bhutan Maoists supporting the Gorkhaland cause. If there are such allegations, I categorically deny them. GJM is following a Gandhian movement, in which there is no scope of violence. Such baseless rumours are being spread by a section of people to intentionally malign our movement,” he told TOI.
Even before any anti-Ghisingh uprising in the Hills could be sensed, Intelligence agencies had reported that the Nepalese population of North Bengal might revive their demand for Gorkhaland. The Nepalese living in the Dooars were never happy with Ghisingh, as they felt the GNLF supremo had betrayed them by excluding Dooars from the DGHC. Read the rest of this entry »

FROM GULF NEWS
KATHMANDU: Even as public outrage erupted in Nepal over Bollywood film Chandni Chowk to China, which wrongly described India as the Buddha’s birthplace and was subsequently banned in the country, an American author has managed to get away with making the same mistake in her best-selling novel.
Celebrated American author Amy Tan’s Saving Fish From Drowning, a quirky tale about the misadventures of a group of American tourists who blunder through China and Myanmar, also wrongly describes the Buddha, who was born in Lumbini in southern Nepal , as an Indian.
Though the novel was first published in 2005 and copies of it are found in Kathmandu’s book shops, the mistake has remained unspotted.
In the sixth chapter of the novel, published by Harper Perennial, where the Myanmar adventures of the travellers begin, the narrator, who is the ghost of the group’s murdered guide, prattles about Buddhism in Myanmar.
“The Buddha did all this (wanting nothing and losing one’s ego),” the ghost talks to herself. “He became so much a nobody that he became famous, the biggest nobody of them all…But I do admire him for his attitude and discipline. He was a good Indian son.”
“Not that all Indian families would want such a son – famous but desiring none of the rewards,” he added.
The slip is surprising since the ghost confesses that she was raised a Buddhist – “a Chinese kind of Buddhism” – and Buddhists revere Lumbini as a holy shrine.
It is also surprising because Tan, the author of such acclaimed books as The Bonesetter’s Daughter and The Joy Luck Club, is also admired for her painstaking research and insight into Asian cultures. Read the rest of this entry »

FROM SOUTH ASIAN MEDIA NET
KATHMANDU: They came to Nepal to view the shrine of Lord Pashupatinath, one of the holiest Hindu deities, and offer their prayers. However, they stayed on – and began robbing other Indian devotees who flocked to the 17th century temple in Kathmandu daily.
Kathmandu police arrested a gang of eight Indian pilgrims turned robbers, who were headed by Nathuram Verma from Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh.
According to Santosh Tamang, inspector at the Gaushala police station in Kathmandu, the gang used to target Indians who were happy to meet fellow Indians who seemed to be at home in the sprawling, maze-like temple complex.
The gang would offer its services as guides as well as pretend to find hotel accommodation and transport back home. On the way, it would rob the unsuspecting travellers.
It also stole cash and other valuables carried by Indian pilgrims, Tamang said.
Police said they had confiscated more than Rs.140,000 from the gang. Read the rest of this entry »

Umesh’s father, Damber Kumar Pradhan told SIKKIM EXPRESS that he has no words to express gratitude to those who donated generously for his son’s treatment. He also personally thanked Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, who had given Rs 50, 000 for Umesh’s treatment.
“We are really fortunate to have a Chief Minister like Mr. Chamling, who really acted as god for me during my ill times,” he added.

FROM SIKKIM EXPRESS
Gangtok, January 23: Despite a clear rebuttal from various political parties and non governmental organizations even after much persuasion, Sikkim National People Party (SNPP) has expressed its determination to go ahead solo on its January 26 bandh call.
“SNPP’s bandh call and hosting of black flags on January 26 stands”, said the party president Biraj Adikhari to reporters after a 3 hour deliberations with other political parties and NGOs yesterday evening here.
Representatives from Sikkim Himali Rajya Parishad (SHRP), BJP, CPIM, Sikkim United party, Sikkim Bhutia Lepcha Apex Committee (SIBLAC), Sikkim Association For Environment (SAFE) and Affected Citizens of Teesta (ACT) had engaged SNPP during the deliberations. No representative from Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee turned up for the meeting called by SNPP.
Prominent in the list of attendees were Bhimsheela Rai, DN Nepal, Jigme N Kazi, Padam Chettri, Athup Lepcha and Tseten Tashi Bhutia while SNPP were represented by Biraj Adikhari and Diley Namgyal Kazi.
The meeting had been called by SNPP to woo the support of the above political parties for its proposed Sikkim bandh on January 26. However, the party’s plea failed to evoke a strong support from the attending parties and the meeting concluded with a verbal agreement to have more such meetings in future for attainment of a common political goal.
Despite this apparent setback, SNPP asserted its determination to go ahead with the bandh call. The bandh call stands and our party members are ready to go ahead with black flags on one side and the national flag on the other side, said Mr. Adikhari. Read the rest of this entry »

DM’s summons to party triumvirate
FROM SIKKIM REPORTER
Gangtok, January 23: District Magistrate (East) has summoned three leaders of Sikkim Nationalist Peoples Party (SNPP) to his office on Saturday to explain about their proposed January 26 Sikkim bandh, which the administration has taken as a likely ‘breach of peace’.
The summons was issued today to SNPP leaders Biraj Adikhari, Diley Namgyal Kazi and Tseten Lepcha.
In the summons, DM (East) has made it clear that the administration has taken SNPP’s proposed bandh call and protest march on January 26 as a breach of peace. The DM has directed them to appear at his office tomorrow at 11 am to ‘show cause’ why they ‘should not be required to enter into a bond of Rs. 50,000 and also to give security by the bond of two sureties in the sum Rs. 50,000 each’ that they ‘will keep the peace for the term of one year’.
In the order sheet, the DM had citied that no permission has sought by SNPP from the SP (East) for its proposed protest march at Gangtok on January 26 and added the proposed protest march shall also be an impediment to the State level Republic Day celebrations at Paljor Stadium.
The order sheet also points out that any attempt to enforce the bandh on the day ‘may be’ met with resistance from individuals, groups and other political parties. Read the rest of this entry »
