Taking a slice of history… “Siliguri showed a population growth of 2.6%, 4.9%, 29.4% and 36.4% in 1891-1901, 1901-11, 1941-51 and 1951-61 respectively. The growth in population till 1941 was due to the rapid urbanization of Siliguri. However, from 1941 onwards the demography of Siliguri and its adjoining areas changed rapidly due the influx of refugees from present day Bangladesh. In 1941-59, the town of Siliguri recorded growth of 61.2%, which was largely due to the influx of refugees from the erstwhile East Pakistan, following the partition of the country in 1947 and the communal riots in 1950. In 1951-61, the population increased by 101.5% for Siliguri town, this again being due influx of refugees from erstwhile East Pakistan. Immigrant refugees, mostly Bengali Hindus from erstwhile East Pakistan became a quantitatively important segment of population of the district, most of who settled in the plains of Siliguri sub-division (West Bengal District Gazeeter, Darjeeling 1980).”

Coming to the point, Gorkhaland is NOT a movement for secession like those witnessed in J&K,Nagaland, Khalistan … Gorkhaland is a dream where INDIAN GORKHAS can live better lives,enjoy basic Govt & Constitutional initiatives of human resources development and rightfully be able to scale up their talent pool….which has been well documented across professions and industries, by the very few who’ve been lucky to do so based on individual endeavours…. All these years, they’ve been the most accomplished sentinels of National Security,whilst on a ground level,back in their hometowns,quality of life has regressed on account of complete APATHY from the West Bengal govt… and this hasn’t happened overnight, it is the cummulative effect of decades of decadence… Objectively, the GLP ,has been formed as a volunteer task force for maintaining order and discipline at public events.. NOWHERE, as pointed out by the article, do they train in arms and lethal weapons for the objective of secession… Kindly substantiate and document this allegation, as befits an ethical and responsible household name like yours… This is an immense blunder and someone has to own responsibility…. Gorkhaland for your information is a mandate of the people of Darjeeling against the Bengal Government for the ignorance and decay of the erstwhile “Queen of the Hills” – Darjeeling and NOT against INDIA the nation. Get your facts right and then report. I guess it is reports like this that push the Government to even consider passing the regressive Information Broadcasting Bill. The GLP is portrayed as an anti-India force, which is absolutely incorrect and there is no intention to arm this volunteer group in the future. They are being taught basic martial arts skills, which has been falsely extrapolated by this reporter as being a threat to the nation’s security. The Gorkhas are the protectors of this nation and will never cause harm to the nation – never. The reporter says “brainwashed misguided youths”. In the first place we would never have these youths if the West Bengal government had provided them employment. And they are not misguided in any way. One has freedom of expression in India to raise a voice against economic and cultural oppression. And who is brainwashing these youth? The reporter made such baseless allegations that we want an immediate stop to all such media lies coming from Darjeeling and Dooars.

db, its true that glmovement is not anti national per se and is well within the bounds of the constitution and your angst is understandable…but it cannot be denied that the movement has ben infiltrted by elements who have got nothing to do with either india or north bengal. the middle and lowers echeleons of gjm have been infiltrated by elements from nepal and bhutan..even north east. one only has to visit hasimara, banarhat or dalgaon to appreciate what i’m trying to say. more than 60% of nepli speaking population here are the ones who have been pushed out from bhutan, north east. this group forms the core source of support for communist party of bhutan (banned) and the disgruntled maoists from nepal. this sounds incredible…but its the truth…i’ve stayed in these parts long enough to appreciate the phonetic distinction in the spoken lingo. and these people have the tacit support of the GJM leadership.

Demand of Gorkhaland is the dream and a genuine demand for every Gorkha of India.Every Indian Gorkha supports it because it is the demand of the true citizens of India who are loyal to Indian Government and fellow citizens.
But the ethnic clashes among the Gorkhas versus Bengalese and Adhivasis is certainly a not invited and welcomed conflict. Most of the Gorkhas have criticized the recent conflicts though it is the cause of intimidation of the racist political party cpm used for its political gain. at the same time it was some short of miscalculation by the so called intellectuals of GJMM. Their misconception about the ground reality of Dooars led to this. It does not mean that Gorkhas wants to be stoned or bulls eye for the aiming arrows.Thats why to combat that a force is necessary to those who wants to retaliate if irritated every now and then.
GLP now seems like some fidayin, or any muslim outfit training group but without any arms. No one can say whether they will be armed in future or not . It may raise hands against the forces of Anti Gorkhaland or the same person who have employed them with promises for future employment.
It is already learnt that there were some case of disgruntle and even protest among the GLP against the GJM leadership, their arrangements etc in the training camps. One day they can be headache to anybody as happened in the 1986 movement by GVC and Gorilla group . Let us not hope for the worst, but be cautious.
