GANGTOK: The Sikkim National Peoples Party (SNPP) has set up a committee to enquire into the attendance of the senior government officials including those from the State Election Office at the marriage ceremony of the Chief Minister’s daughter yesterday at Namchi.

The SNPP task committee is headed by its working president Tseten D Lepcha, informs a press release.

The committee has been instructed to specifically enquire into the ‘impropriety committed, if any, by the senior election department officials by so attending the wedding during the election period and also if the election code of conduct has been violated’.

The committee will also enquire into the level of harassment suffered by the general public due to non-availability of officers in almost every office.

The committee is also tasked to enquire into the fact whether the ‘expenses incurred during the wedding have been declared and whether the amount shall be included in the election fund of the SDF party as bound by election laws’.

“This shall be investigated in the backdrop of the recently held SDF day which was a lavish affair”, said SNPP president Biraj Adikhari in the press statement.

On the other hand, the State Election Office has stressed that those making complaints about violation of model code of conduct must be clear while drafting their complaints with specific details.

The Joint Chief Electoral Officer CP Dhakal said that the Election Office finds it quite difficult to act on vague complaints. He urged the people, specially the leaders of the opposition parties, to help the State Election Office in taking action against violation of model code of conduct by providing specific details with regard to the act of violations as well as with regard to the persons involved in it.
