Dr. Harkabahadur Chettri

There were much that was expected out of the recent Gorkha Janmukti Morcha Central Committee reshuffle. However, to much of our dismay, nothing really seems to have come out of it. In fact, some even questioning certain appointments as being imprudent. For instance, the appointment of Dr. Harka Bahadur Chettri as the new Press and Publicity Secretary. If memory serves well, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha Central Committee leadership had had hard time trying to keep Dr. Chettri at bay especially during last monsoon when Dr. Chettri fired full salvos of rhetoric without ever considering where his words would land the party in. It was also Dr. Chettri’s words which had cost the party some browny points when he repeatedly told the press that the party would go alone and field its own candidates for the Lok Sabha Election if no national party supported its agenda. Earlier, Bimal Gurung, the party President had made the party’s stand clear when he had said that Gorkha Janmukti Morcha would not contest election. Dr. Chettri’s assertions thus going against party’s official stand to an extent even exposing the inner dealings within the party not appropriate for the consumption of general populace. Obviously, the party has let the bygone be bygone and appointed Dr. Chettri as the Press and Publicity Secretary. But then again as it is said, “old habits die hard”, Dr. Chettri has immediately landed the party in trouble by hinting that “the party could come to an important conclusion before 2010″. Political observers and analysts are wondering why Dr. Chettri made such an statement – “What Conclusion? Why before 2010? Is this conclusion related to the Gorkhaland movement itself ?” While it might not be appropriate here to assume any thing, Dr. Chettri’s statement has put a ‘question mark’ in everyone’s mind. There are only a handful of months left before the advent of 2010 yet the party has decided to ‘go soft’ on the movement. Further with the BJP in the opposition and in no position to force upon the UPA government to make such decision as that of the formation of a separate state anywhere in the nation, aren’t statements like these nothing inherent of the lack of faith within the party. The party has so far made its stand clear that Gorkhaland will be achieved before the dateline of 2010 – does this statement then not indicate that leaders within the party do not agree with the same and want to come out with a more realistic and practical vision? Whatever the fact may be, the press releases and the press conferences will surely be more spicy now that Dr. Chettri is the Press and Publicity Secretary – it would be hard for the party to stop him from speaking up his mind – and speak he will!

Well written Barun, too bad there is no one to comment or discuss on this. People will go at length chasing each other with their nonsense but when it comes to deliberating on something really warranted everybody feels scared.

  2. Gaurav Sharma said

I think Dr. Chettri is really a bad choice of press and publicity secretary of the party!

  3. Rajneesh said

Well Dr Chettri, that “important conclusion” should really be important in forwarding the GL cause I am sure.

  4. Dr. K L. Pradhan said

I hope GJM at this moment is not pursuing an exit policy because it certainly seems that it has been trapped in its own quagmire. It certainly seems that there is quiet a bit of panic within the central leadership of the party… whatever may have been … ultimately, we are still where we started apart from the fact that Jaswant Singh is our Member of Parliament. My only desire is that he will live up to the expectation.

Giving a date to anything in the future is not adivisable unless of course Dr Chhetri has some gameplan to checkmate some events in the coming future.

  6. DobRub said

Well, if we go by Dr. Chettri’s statement then, we could all kiss goodbye to the agitation that we have going on for statehood. If I understand his statement correctly then I believe that the agitation for statehood would come to an end before 2010 because a “conclusion” will definitely bring down the curtains on every activity of the GJM.

So, I guess the people should be ready to hear some shocker from GJM…..SOON!

  7. JTM said

So Dobrub are you also supporting the demand for Gorkhaland? Or hoping it fizzles out.

  8. Sanity said

Nothing big is going to happen from the GJM side. What has to happen must happen from the Central and West Bengal governments. Indian politics is known for stone-walling issues and demands till the opposition falls down from exhaustion. The GJM must not fall prey to this kind of stone-wallling. It must continue to plug and plod till they give in. Raise issues that put these govenments in a quandry and embarassment (I say do a “Pu”-type event every now and then!) Make your voice heard often. Let the Gorkhaland issue come to the national forefront every quarter, not by violent means though.

  9. A A said

I agree with Dolrub the way things seem, Gorkhaland movement may once again be put into suspended animation… I hope who it will be after GJM…

The Gorkhaland movement appears to be harply divided in two factions…for some it means the defining of the gorkha identity in India ..for others a statehood which will give them many GOI benefits.

The former will go on doggedly till it is achieved whenever. The latter will keep on criticising like disgruntled children who are impatiently waiting for their icecreams which seems to be a longtime in coming.

While the leaders in Darjeeling are doing their bit, a positive healthily developing sidelight is being missed. The Gorkhas are coming closer to each other outside the boundaries of Darjeeling.

  16. JTM said

    Sorry, sharply divided…

it is time that gjmm should spell out what its policies are, what about the council, will it be run by bureaucrat like this. What about the panchayat elections, why is the party not being able to look into these matters.

is gjmm coming to an end?
if so then their fate will be worse than those of the gnlf, GNLF members got few beatings but the GJMM members would get a widespread beating not only in the hills but also in the paains.

If as you say his demand for separate state is just an impression then pl tell us what is the real truth. You mean it is all hogwash? You mean he is just doing it to be on TV? That I find difficult to digest.

  26. JTM said

    One thing to make clear..
My both paternal n maternal grandparents were not tea workers.
One of my grandpas fought the 2nd WW and married in Quetta.(now Pakistan)The other was a policeman.
There r some truths in ur reference but that doesnt mean all forefathers of Darjeeling Gorkhas were plantation workers !

    Reetha

  31. JTM said

Pounded Reetha soaked to make a solution(I hope you know what is Reetha)in running streams within home premises or a women and children group trip to the Bauris for bathing and washing in tne afternoon, because at that time homes did not have waterline connections. Drinking water would be brought in gharas or gagros from bauris and placed in a line on platform outside the kitchen. There were hardy village women who only did this job—that is delivering water to households from the bauris. One ghara on the head, one at the waist and gharas made of kasa metal.

    Does this ans yr question?

It has some real value, my gud fren.
You need to utd such small things if u want to know abt the subject, u r so determined to get acquaint urself.
Btw, our forefathers used “ash” to get the dirt out of their clothings. The method was simple. Put dirty clothes in boiling “ash water” for 30 min and the work s done.
You must ve noticed still in hill villages, charcoal n ash is used to wash utensils.
    Next querry:
Our forefathers used to take care of their hair with a special “gorkhe comb” made from a plant.Wats the name of that comb/plant ?

  38. JTM said

We used ‘kharani’ ash from the ‘choola’ for cleaning the utensils. Comb made from plant? I’ve not heard of that one.Whats it? My great granny used those short flat double-sided combs carved out of wood i think. We also have trees called Kangi phool, becaus the blooms are like a long kangi orange in colour

  39. JTM said

    What is paangra made of?

We refer to something spotted or multi-hued as Pangray. Half the dogs of Gorkhali homes with multicoloured or spotted coats are called ‘PANGRU’

  40. Amfoi said

Actually, “paang ra” is a roundish seed of a wild climber. Its kernel was used as soap alongwith reetha.
Till recently, kids used paangra to play “khoppi”.

  41. patleybaskounpad said

actually amfoi….unless you are acquainted with all the variants (geographical, linguistic and sporting) of the khoppi i will have to beg to differ with you…
while khoppi is played with the dhaka and involves striking the coins that one deals (sprays) into a rectangular gaming area from a distance of say about 7feet..
the pangra is used a bit differently..the coins (or tokens) are stuck on soft mud and the player delivering the pangra ..strikes those coins from a much longer distance (about 15 feet) in a spinning fashion..using two fingers of both hands placed on the seed to provide a coupling force….

1.You mean it is all hogwash? You mean he is just doing it to be on TV? That I find difficult to digest.
answere-even my grand parents were not from this place…the basis on which gjmm is aksing the gorkhaland is that there demand is 100 year old…but my dear real math is wrong….100-47=63.if india has got just independece 63 year old how can gorhkaland demand is 100 year old.there r so many logics i can give but ask one by one.

    2. what is the difference between separate state and separate statehood?

answer-almost all the gorkhas are taking india as fedrel state where they can get away with seperate statehood demand something on the line of srilanka .gorkhas are fighting with west bengal state forgetting that india is a union of states, where state does not hold any powers to give seprate statehood.rest i will write if i get response.

I will add one more question to your list.
Why do we always get questions like yours that make no sense in the fight for Gorkhaland?

    a. The retired colonel is well within his rights to marry a 18 year old girl. Had she been younger he could have been prosecuted for rape and child marriage, but this doesn’t seem to be the case.

    b. Talk show on what? On the Gorkhaland issue or the marriage of the retired colonel? There were shows many months back but unless the Gorkhaland issue is on the national news there will be no talk shows. How does one create news?

    c. As far as I know wearing battle fatigues is not illegal at all. If it is I would like to know which law prohibits it.

    d. Poor people not only suffer during strikes but they suffer even when there are no strikes. That is why there is are strikes in the first place.

    e. Well, the outsider must be an “antaryami” to know about all the problems of the “insider” Darjeelingeys for us to hand over the leadership in his/her hands.

  51. JTM said

The allegations on the retired colonel: I know his family personally and he has not married any 18 year old girl! How dare you make such false allegations about respectable families or anybody? Just shows how yr brain works. Totally backward!

THIS IS UTTER NONSENSE and just because of this all your other points go into a dustbin.

It is like interviewing a candidate by asking:

How do you expect the candidate to react in such circumstances.

    hi layaman and amfoi….dear bro’s

As i told u claiming the gorkhaland demand as 100 year old to the union of india is wrong as i told u union of india is just 63 year old.
    1.New Delhi point of view:-

The ongoing impasse over the Darjeeling issue has encouraged other small regional fanatic forces in the state to raise demands for separate statehood. Most such demands are being raised by groups active in the Darjeeling-straddling districts of north Bengal. The Centre has received demands for creation of at least 10 new states, including a separate Mithilanchal in Bihar, Saurashtra in Gujarat and Coorg in Karnataka. A senior Home Ministry official said the demands were mostly received from organisations like Telengana Rashtra Samiti and Gorkha Janamukti Morcha and some other organisations and individuals. The most vocal organisation TRS has placed its demand for creation of Telengana state, comprising Telengana region in Andhra Pradesh, a few years back while the GJM has been putting pressure to carve out Gorkhaland state out of Darjeeling and its adjoining areas in West Bengal.
The demand for creation of Bundelkhand state, comprising districts like Banda, Chitrakoot, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Sagar of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have been pending for long with the ministry, the official said, adding, though no state Government has given any recommendation, which is mandatory for carving out a new state, the demands continue to pour in.

  55. aman said

there are better reasons that we should have seprate state than using 100 year old identity problem….they are as follows:-

I think that the a country of this size and population, deserves to have 40-50 states, so that people do not need to travel a thousand kms to get to their state capital, and to their elected government, in case they want their grievances addressed. Interestingly, a Hindu priest once told me (and no this is not some right-wing Hindu revivalist agenda), that ancient India was anyway divided into around 50 “khands”, and a faint consciousness of these geographic (not religious mind you), entities is still their in the collective memories of people, in folk songs, in religious texts (like during incantations) and funnily enough, even used in electoral voting analysis (we have all heard Dr. Pranoy Roy enunciating about the voting behaviour in say the “Mahakoshal” region of Madhya Pradesh)!

    LAYMAN’S ROAD TOWARDS GORKHALAND………….

Here are a few suggestions on the process:

■Let there be a permanent statutory body called the States Reorganization Commission (SRC)
■Any citizen can file an application with the SRC for the creation of a new state, giving a justification for which would have to include historical, linguistic, geographical, and other reasons for this, with at least 1000 signatures from registered voters in that proposed state.
■The SRC board would review such an application (to eliminate all frivolous ones, like one recent bankrupt intellectual who declared secession from India, to form a mobile, independent, republic of one person)
■Post approval by the SRC, the Government of India has to mandatorily commission a detailed study on the viability of this new state, including financial, economic, societal, etc., including what city could be considered as the state capital, as well as the impact the creation of this new state would have on the parent state, with suggested counter-measures (e.g. no one planned for the impact of the creation of Jharkhand on the state of Bihar, not that Jharkhand should not have been created, but we should have planned for countering the impact on Bihar, through developmental funds, industrial policies, tax rebates, etc.). The report should also include whether there are competing names for this new state (like we had the case between Uttaranchal and Uttarakhand).
■This report should be prepared by a consulting firm of repute, through a competitive bidding process, and released publicly by the government, in English, Hindi and the regional language (if relevant), for wider discussion and debate.
■The release of this report should be followed by a year-long public consultation exercise, facilitated by political parties and the government, wherein a public hearing should be conducted in all districts of the proposed new state and the impacted parent state
■One year from the release of the report, the election commission should be asked to conduct a referendum on the issue of the creation of the new state, in both the areas of the proposed new state and the impacted parent state(s). The referendum should be on just ask two simple questions:
■Should the new state be created?
■What should be the name of the new state (if there is more than one name in contention)?
■The motion should be considered as cleared if more than 50% of the voters in the proposed new state and more than 25% of the voters in the parent state(s) approve the motion. If not, then the motion should be denied and the state should not be created. In the peculiar outcome of a parent state not willing to let go, and if more then 75% of voters in the new state vote for the motion, then it should either be passed by a 2/3rd majority in both the houses of parliament (to overrule the voters of the parent state) or it should be deferred (and cannot be brought up for a referendum for five years).
■Post the passing of the motion from the state voters, a simple majority in parliament should suffice to create the new state. This could be overruled by the joint houses of parliament, if they vote against this motion by a 2/3rd majority.
■Once the parliament has approved the motion, the new state should be created after a period of one year, as that much time needs to be provided to the parent state to plan and execute the division of assets and liabilities, etc., and only then should a new state be created.

  57. aman said

There are many demands for the creation of new states in the country, including Telangana, Vidarbha, etc. Actually, a casual look at the geography of India, throws up at least the following potential candidates for statehood:

    1.Telangana (from AP)
    2.Rayalaseema (from AP)
    3.Konaseema (balance parts of AP)
    4.Kongu Nadu (from TN)
    5.Coorg (from Karnataka)
    6.Marathwada (from Maharashtra)
    7.Konkan (from Maharashtra)
8.Khandesh (from Maharashtra – it had a large geographical spread during the British days, and included some parts of South Gujarat)
    9.Vidarbha (from Maharashtra)
10.Mumbai (the MMR region that is – this was Jawaharlal Nehru’s original plan – Congress are you listening?)
11.Western Maharashtra (may be better to call it the state of Pune)
    12.Saurashtra (from Gujarat)
    13.Kutch (from Gujarat)
    14.Marwar (from Rajasthan)
    15.Mewar (other part of Rajasthan)
    16.Malwa (from MP)
    17.Mahakoshal (from MP)
    18.Bundelkhand (from MP and UP)
    19.Baghelkhand (from MP and UP)
    20.Awadh (from UP)
    21.Rohilkhand (from UP)
22.Poorvanchal (from UP – although I prefer the name Kashi)
23.Gorkhaland (from WB – why not)
    24.Kalinga (from Orissa)
    25.Utkala (from Orissa)
I am sure that there could be more options and difference names for the proposed states, or even different Geographic contiguities.

Finally the mother of all decisions should also be to separate Jammu, and Kashmir into separate states and grant the legitimate demands of the people of Ladakh for a Union territory of their own.

While this almost sounds “splittist”, frankly, we will see much better governance and a greater devolution of power. It will also make the central government less dependent on the state satraps of large states, which actually creates a problem in addressing national issues (like water sharing), because the central government cannot afford to annoy the satraps of a large state.

Is that long list for the people of Darjeeling to demand? If so, my question is why? Why should we be worried that there are 50 other regions asking for statehood? The Gorkhaland demand is the specific demand of the people of Darjeeling and cannot be connected to what has or has not happened in Bundelkhand or Kutch. India still doesn’t think as a nation even today – let us be clear on that. Just take the example of the Bihar MPs shouting that there was no mention of Bihar even as Pranab Mukherjee was presenting the Central budget today. We Gorkhas must stop looking for the overall good of the nation and look at the good of ourselves and our land first – that is the first lesson we must learns as Indians. Let us be selfish like the others or else we will not survive in this country.

@71. Half of the politicians in India are school dropouts. Why being snooty abt somone who is apparently class 8th pass? He could not study bcause he had to start working to support his family. Now is that a disqualification? There is no doubt abt his IQ levels. He is definitely not someone who dropped school because he was a dud. Come on more than half of India are below literacy levels. Because of economic and social circumstances not because they are dumb. Now lets not be snooty and sarcastic abt anyone’s lack of financial means to complete his studies. believe me I ahve met several of rich kids having studied abroad with parental wealth. Yet when they return let me tell you they are as dumb as doorknobs.

  85. JTM said

@81 Yr headgear description appears as if you are attending a IPL match in South africa. But thats over now so kindly remove yr headgear. If you still wearing it you might be mistaken to be from the gay parade. What will happen to us if ILMI is kidnapped by a besotted gay?

So make your ‘advances’ in different blog to different individual.

Second, read books on communication skill, it will help you emboss your blabbers to some extent.

Third, I see that you love to be in New York. Why don’t you surrender Indian passport and apply for driving in New York City or witer in restaurant. Yeah..cool huh?

Last, know the meaning of bharat, know its diversity, its beauty within chaos.
