Dehradun: The 6/8 Gorkha Rifles began their campaign at the District Football League with a 4-2 win against young and inexperienced Junior Vijay Cantt here on Friday. Doon Valley managed to register a close 1-0 win against Western Boys in the second match of the day.

Playing their first match in the league, the 6/8 Gorkha Rifles gained lead early in the match. Narender Chettri (9th minute) found the target to put the army outfit 1-0 up. Nine minutes later Sandeep extended the lead 2-0. Agile Zigmilla Bhutiya, who was declared the best forward of the championship of the recently concluded Narendra Singh Kharola Memorial Football, exhibited his brilliant skills to give the Gorkha Rifles 3-0 lead in the first half.

After taking a 3-0 lead in the first half, the army team looked a relaxed in the second half. Tika Prashad of the Junior Vijay Cantt surprised their rival by scoring a brace (5th and 6th minute). The score was now 3-2 and all of a sudden the Vijay Cantt boys changed the complexion of the game totally. The young Junior Vijay Cantt side put on a spirited performance to give a stiff competition to the army men. Nar Prashad scored the last goal for the winning team to make the final score 4-2.

The Western Boys went down fighting to Doon Valley 0-1. The Western Boys goalkeeper Monu Basnet was outstanding behind the bars. Doon Valley striker Amit Chandel looked dangerous in the dying minutes of the first half, but Monu anticipated Chandel’s header perfectly to avert the situation. Both teams were locked 0-0 at the first half.

In the second half, Nikunj Ashwal, Prashant Gairola and Tarun Ashwal were instrumental in making many great moves. Nikunj gave a perfect pass to Prashant Gairoal in the 6th minute (second half). After missing the target (on pole bar) in the first attempt, Gairola was successful in rolling the ball in the second attempt. After taking 1-0 lead the Doon Valley missed two scoring opportunities to take advantage of enhancing the lead. In the last minute of the game, Western Boys striker Vishal dodged past the rival defence but after great run misdirected the shot to give a sigh of relief to Doon Valley supporters.

On Saturday, Khukri Club will clash with Little Star and Cantt Blues will meet Rishikesh at the Pavilion Ground.
