DARJEELING HILLS: GJM goes in strike mode again, Hills head for fresh trouble

Even as the Darjeeling Hills head for yet another indefinite shutdown from Monday, called by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha over the police action against its supporters, the GJM’s ally BJP indicated that the party would support the bandh call.
“The strike has been called by our partner. We have nothing to say on this,” BJP leader Dawa Sherpa, who was initially touted to get the LS ticket from Darjeeling, said.
Trouble broke out in Panighata near Kurseong town on July 8 when a group of GJM supporters attacked the residence of local GNLF leader Rajen Mukhia over some differences. Following a complaint lodged by Mukhia, police arrested three GJM supporters. On July 10, a large mob of GJM supporters went on rampage and set ablaze Mukhia’s residence. Unable to control the GJM men, police resorted to lathi-charge and hurled shells of tear gas.
Protesting the police action, the GJM leadership has called for an indefinite shutdown beginning on Monday and demanded the transfer of IGP (north Bengal) K L Tamta and action against Additional Superintendent of Police (headquarters) Akhilesh Chaturvedi and Kurseong SDPO Rajesh Singh. The GJM also demanded the arrest of Mukhia and 34 GNLF supporters.
Till late on Sunday evening, GJM leaders remained engaged in a meeting. Party general secretary Roshan Giri said there was no question of calling off the bandh. “ We want the removal of Tamta, Chaturvedi and Singh. We’ve set a deadline of Monday afternoon. If our demands are not met, the indefinite strike will begin for the separate Gorkhaland,” Giri said.
To appease the GJM, the Darjeeling police arrested Mukhia and two others on Saturday.
The GNLF, however, said the strike call had nothing to do with the demand for a separate Gorkhaland. The GNLF MLA from Kurseong, Shanta Chettri, said the GJM was trying to politicise the issue. “The GJM had some disagreement with us over the application for a government tender. It is an open tender and anyone can apply. Some of our supporters had done so. Now, the whole issue is being given a political hue by the GJM. We’re also for Gorkhaland but this issue has nothing to do with the Gorkhaland,” Chettri said.
CPM MLA from Siliguri Asok Bhattacharya said the demands of the GJM were absurd. “How can the GJM demand the transfer of a police officer? Transfers are done by the government. They (GJM) are trying to create unrest in the Hills again,” Bhattacharya said.
DM Surendra Gupta said the arrested persons had been remanded in judicial custody till July 24. “All shops are open and people were busy buying food rations and other essentials in preparation of the bandh. The government has not given any instructions to tourists and students to leave the Hills,” Gupta said.

“The strike has been called by our partner. We have nothing to say on this,” BJP leader Dawa Sherpa……….. what does that mean?
I totally agree with the GNLF MLA from Kurseong, Shanta Chettri.
Yes IGP (north Bengal) K L Tamta and action against Additional Superintendent of Police (headquarters) Akhilesh Chaturvedi should be removed…. they are too timid to take strong action against the GJM goons. We need a strong people.

First you burn Mukhia’s house and then you have the administration arrest him?
Where do we live?
Is this India in 2009?
Or is it a barbaric crowd being lead by an illiterate?

The police complaint should not have been made. GNLF and GJMM should sort their diffrences themselves. Allow the cops in everyone will suffer. Cos thats exactly the kind of opening that is neing waited for. A complaint by a Darjeelinger against Darjeelingers.

What are you talking about…. if the leaders of Darjeeling had that much brain & honestly, Darjeeling would have been a much better place.

Anyway it seems that taking leadership in Darjeeling is the most difficult job of all…I heard abt unity in diversity but it seems to that there is too much of diversity for a unity.

You can disgree but a dispute can be on anything – a stolen chicken, the elopement of a girl, fight for water or a dispute on tenders! But the strike here is not just about tenders. It is about police high-handedness under the Bengal regime.

All being said and done…
Nothing is going to change in darjeeling…

it causes problems for us the residents of this beautiful place..
first it was the GNLF and now ITS GJM
all wolfs .. ready to strike
what has therse strikes given us in the last 25 years
just utter chaos..
the business suffers
the public suffers
and every months the business people pay tribute to the GLM depending on the size of the business an top of that strikes..

Worst thing GL can do…Please kindlly do not end becoming another mini-Bengal in terms of political ways and habits. Perhaps visiting other Gorkha Indian habitats and seeing how they have lived for centuries would be a good idea.

Hay Listen to me carefully. Both GNLF and GJM making us fool. They make money by applying tenders and since earlier there was only one party (GNLF) the thing was between them. Now there are two parties (GNLF and GJM) and they are opeaning mouth for each other. We public should open our eyes and we should kick the ass of this idiots politicians. Kick the ass of SUBHASH GISHING (GNLF) and BIMAL GURUNG (GJM). KILL THIS NALI KA KIDA. THEY ARE VIRUS IN THE SOCIETY. PUT KEORESON OIL ON THEM AND BURN THEM.

That is what SG tried to do before he was ousted – stone worship, etc. Do you think present leaders will dare follow that path?
JTM said
I dont much abt SG’s stone worship tho heard bits and pieces. But yes most of the ancient Hindu idols are stones or carved out of stones. In fact in the north most famous and old Devi temples are actually a stone with two silver or gold eyes. Even many old Hanuman or Ganesh temples have idols of natural stone with contours of them. There is this famous Ganesh temple in maharashtra at Ganpatipule where the idol is a natural stone formation.
Would not mind knowing more abt SG’s stone worshipping.
