FROM SIKKIM EXPRESS
GANGTOK, July 14: In a rare case, a 20-year-old hailing from Yangang, South Sikkim lost his eyesight after he was given an antibiotic injection for toothache at the Singtam Hospital.
A case of negligence was reported at the State Capital today.
Binod Tamang has alleged that the negligence on the part of the medical fraternity at the Singtam Hospital made him lose the sight in his left eye.
Speaking to SIKKIM EXPRESS today, Binod said that a Medical Officer on duty gave three antibiotics injections continuously without proper investigation on June 25 last month when he visited the hospital with complaints of pain in his left jaw.
“Despite making several requests to extract the tooth on that day, the doctor advised me to visit him after four days,” he said adding that he was later referred to STNM Hospital without any referral documents.
Later, to his horror, Binod began to feel uneasy in his left eye. “One morning when I looked at the mirror, I found that my left eye was hanging out, after which I was rushed to the STNM hospital where my left eye was taken out through an operation,” he narrated.
Binod, who originally hailed from Bhutan, has been working as a construction labourer in Sikkim for the past 10 years.
Grieved with no fault of his own, the helpless man has requested for justice. He believes that serious intervention by the department in the case may give him justice.
Supporting him in the lone fight is All Sikkim Youth Welfare Association (ASYA).
Interacting with media persons, ASYA President Robin Rai said the association will support Binod and help him get all the compensation as per law.
The Medical Superintendent of STNM Hospital Dr. I.L Sharma said this: “I have gone through the report and the case was as such that the boy would have lost sight in both the eyes if he was not brought early to the STNM hospital’.
Dr. Sharma refused to further comment on the matter.
Dr. Doma Bhutia, a legal consultant of Human Rights Law Network said, “If medical negligence is proved, the matter can be dragged in the court of law and the victim can be suitably compensated.”
No contact could be established with the concerned authority of Singtam Hospital till the time of filing this report.

What kind of antibiotic produces that kind of effect?
