FROM THE STATESMAN

SILIGURI, 13 OCT: Kali puja would be held about a month earlier this year and cracker lovers have to pay for it. Crackers would cost dear this year due to several reasons, including the early advent of the puja, says a cracker manufacturer in Siliguri, Mr Jayanta Singh Roy.

Mr Singha Roy, who produces various kinds of crackers at Hatiramjote near Siliguri, said: “As Durga puja was held early this year, we have less time to manufacture crackers in large quantity. And because of the monsoon, we would not be able to dry the raw materials. In addition to this, the cost of raw materials has increased manifold. The labour charge and transportation cost have also increased. To keep the quality intact, the production cost would be far more than last year,” he added. “And to compete in the market, I cannot compromise with the quality of my products,” Mr Roy said.

Mr Singha Roy, who manufactures noiseless crackers, said that it was his own decision to produce various kinds of light emitting crackers when he started the business. “Though the state government has banned crackers that cause noise few years back, I am not interested in making those,” he said. He manufactures various kinds of fancy and display items for the season.

“Around 15 workers are working in his unit since September. I supply my products to the districts of north Bengal,” he added.
