SILIGURI: SFI sweeps election in Dental College

FROM THE STATESMAN

SILIGURI, 20 NOV: Striding against the statewide political trend spilling from the larger electoral realm into the educational institutions, the SFI has sprung a surprise sweeping the students’ union elections in the Dental College in Siliguri.

The CPI-M students’ wing has won all the 19 seats in the taking with the rival SUCI-affiliated Democratic Students’ Organisation drawing a blank. This is the first time the anti-SFI forces contested the election.

Ascribing the clean sweep to a discernible shift in the subjective perception in the student community, the Darjeeling district SFI vice president, Dr Bhaskar Ray said that the election result from the Dental College in Siliguri heralded the turnaround for the pro-development forces against the retrogressive mindset represented by the Opposition.

“The seemingly deepening slide in the SFI support base in the state is a passing phase and it must reverse again in our favour, for the student force in West Bengal cannot remain tethered to the backward-looking plank opposing the imperative of industrialisation. This apart, we have done enough by way of transforming the Dental College into a well-equipped institution, while those opposing us have done nothing beyond spiking the development tempo,” Dr Ray said.

Elaborating the achievement of the SFI in the development of the dental College in Siliguri, another organisation member, Dr Anindya Ray said that the college and the hostel buildings, now under construction, were due to the relentless endeavour on the part of the SFI over the years.

Commenting on the students’ union election result, the Darjeeling district SUCI secretary, Mr Goutam Bhattacharya said that the result was surprising for the DSO. “We would analyse the result in detail. We must find out why our student organisation failed to dent the SFI support base at a time when it is withering all over the state,” the SUCI leader said.
