Barun,
I think this is the better place to continue our discussion regarding “audio embedding” problems (instead of “48 minute interview….” section).
I also tested an mp3 file with zShare. They are quite good for hosting but I could not find a way to embed it into WordPress blog/site. As you have mentioned earlier, the problem is in the audio file naming by zShare. They change the file name as well as remove the extension. WordPress [audio] tag should have .mp3 extension (should work with other media ext. too?).
There are 100s of free hosting sites available but most are not reliable. It is really hard to find a good, reliable and stable service for free.
After few searches I found one where you can get .mp3 file extension even after you uploading the file. It works fine with WordPress when you embed using [audio] tag. This hosting offers 10GB space and 10GB of monthly bandwidth (as they have mentioned in their site). I found this hosting more user friendly and very easy to upload and delete files. You can give it a try if you want. Please let me know how you go with this.
Hosting site: http://www.musicwebtown.com/community/index.php
You need to sign-up first. This following site shows you how to do.
How-To: http://www.thestatusjoe.com/2007/01/27/how-to-upload-and-stream-your-mp3s-through-your-wordpresscom-blog-for-free/
P.S. Even in this section the topic looks unrelated to the headline, therefore you may delete this post after you finish doing.

Dear Nepali Dai,
Greetings from Darjeeling! Please accept my deepest regrets at not being able to reply to your mail earlier. Well for a couple of days, we at Darjeeling faced a severe internet service failure especially those who are using BSNL. It was almost impossible to even upload 50 kb of info on the site. Secondly, at the same time rather unknowingly I began majorly revamping the site based on the info received from the readers. The result was that most of the readers could neither comment or go through the site without hitches. Thus, you can see that it took a majority of these fews days to get back to normality.
I checked out the site that you have given to me. It is simply fantastic. I should now be able to upload audios – interviews and music albums. A lot of my friends who are in the band scene are really interested in releasing some numbers online through Beacononline. You have surely rendered a great deal of help! I am also opening up a technical support forum, I hope you will always be there for all of us.

You are doing an exceptionally good job ! Great Going ! I am from Darjeeling and now based in Dubai, so I am getting my daily dose of the local Darjeeling news from your webpage. Its now been a regular routine in my office to start my day by going through ‘beacononline’. Your extensive coverage in all the areas is well appreciated. I was back in Darjeeling on vacation during November-December and the wave of the GJM was on peak that time.So I was curious enough to know about the situation there. Its good to be acquainted with the recent happenings in Darjeeling through you.

Highly appreciative works! Any body, if ever desires to live a conscious living he or she must pursue love for human beings irrespective of cast creed & the rest. Your reaction to human miseries is so moving, I mean for the Hill People. Late Beni Gopal Mitra (one of the pioneers of Tea Planters of North Bengal) was my grand father-in-law. I’m the youngest daughter-in-law of late Jitendra Nath Mitra (son of late B.G.Mitra) of 24 J. N. Mitra Rd. of Darjeeling. Baba (J.N.Mitra) cherished such a warm feeling for darj.people & all of us too. Let me convey my deepest feel to you all. I love darj. & its people & ‘ll love always not only for my emotional tie with it & its people but also because of the injustice the crooked politicians do commit & remain accountable for human miseries. After years I have arrived in here. I’m an Australian citizen. Have you read the book “Empire Speaks”? You’ll be shocked to realize how these politicians due to their conflict of interest are still degrading our personal lives.
I haven’t read any of your books but I sincerely intend to read them all.

Dear Mrs. Mitra,
Greetings from Darjeeling! Your words are soothing and encouraging. There were much that our ancestors left – a legacy as such of truthfulness, tolerance, wisdom and above all universal brotherhood. Alas, the modern generation lived up to them. Politics based on regionalism has caused havoc among the Nepali-Bengali people. The need of the hour thus is to heal and bridge the chasm that has been wedged into the collective heart and soul of our people. Beacon Online is my modest yet earnest endeavour to achieve the same. However, it is not possible without your blessings and prayers.
Thank you very much for your encouraging comments

Sorry, new at yoru blog. I am commenting because all of a sudden watching you on NewsX was a pleasant surprise. I am here at Kochi and sitting down having my dinner watching Gorkhaland story on NewsX with you on it blew my mind…It is great to learn you are doing well. It reminded me of the old Barun standing up for everyone even if it meant danger to his life. Do you remember the the days in Hindustan Institute of Engineer Technology, Madras when you marched 50 hostelers to protest against ragging. We were first year students and the fight that ensured at the Canteen which ended up in teh clash of more than a hundred freshers and seniors. You would lead like a commander and we would all follow you. You always spoke in Nepali and cursed in Nepali. When we used to ask you why you cursed so much you would say that no one would understnad…The fun we had after the clash because no senior would touch us….College was great… guys still talk about you….Akash is presently in Kolkata still with Hyundai, Sadhu in Bhubaneswar and the last I heard of him, he is married and now a professor of Physics, who would have ever beleived that. Soni is still rocking, freaking his parents out, Subu (Subramaniam P. Shinde remember him) now owns numerous Maruti Suzuki Showrooms in Mumbai and has become a millionarie…i am doing well myself, married and a dad with an IT company…It is great to hear about yuo..reminded me of the old colleges day…Damn! By the way let me spoil things for you and divulge into some of your secrets….Barun was known as The Black Jack…as he always went cookoos for the African Girls in HIET: http://www.hindustancollege.com/hiet.html

Dear Barun
I just came across your blog and thought that this can be a very interesting vehicle to communicate with the people of Darj hills.
I am an architect by profession and born and brought up in plains. However destiny took me to the hills and and eventually I got
involved in several projects in Sikim, meghalaya to mizoram and beyond. Last year I got involved (almost as an outsider) in a very interesting project related to the water supply system for Darjeeling. I considered this as great opportunity as the project could have been an engineering marvel. I personally trekked from Rambul-Balason confluence to Sinchal lake along with two of my ex colleagues and tried to document the route (holistic way) as much as possible. the existing route will go through a tremendous amount of transformation and will look completely different as the project progresses and I think that the development of the project should be well documented for greater transparency and for posterity. I mean the dynamics of people-project-purpose etc etc. may be a NATGEO type. It is just an idea I shared with you. If you could find any taker then please let me know. I can participate in a constructive way.
Thank you

Dear Mr. Wienmandu,
We have the contents of Sugauli Treat on Beacon Online and you can get it by clicking on the following link.
http://beacononline.wordpress.com/2008/07/16/sougaulee-treaty/
As for Beacon: The Himalayan Beacon known until 2006 simply as BEACON is a monthly news-magazine published in Darjeeling by The Mandalay Books India (Pvt.) Ltd., and distributed throughout Darjeeling Hills and Sikkim. It is now owned by The Mandalay Books India (Pvt.) Ltd., which publishes other periodicals, including the weekly newspaper ‘This Week’ and ‘The Himalayan Traveller’. It is the largest and the first magazine to be published by and for the Darjeeling Hills. Nicknamed the “Fire Hose” for its colourful appearance and undiplomatic journalistic style, it is often regarded as a source of record, meaning that it is frequently relied upon as the official and authoritative reference for modern events. Founded in 1998 by Barun Roy the magazine is by far more popular among the youths of the region than the readers of other generations. The magazine’s name is often abbreviated to Beacon, due to its earlier popularity as Beacon. Its famous motto, always printed in the upper left-hand corner of the cover page, is “News and Views on All for All.”

2. I have no Godfathers and I know every leaders in Darjeeling and address them as daju, uncle so on and so forth. That comes out of Darjeeling being a small town and people getting to know each other. Not like things in New Delhi from where you are writing.
3. I support the demand for Gorkhaland and this blog and Gorkhapedia is all about the unification of Gorkhas under one platform. I do this not under any political banner but under my own conviction. If my conviction goes against yours its too bad.

1. I am not writing from New Delhi but from Hasimara;

3. The idea was to understand in prson how a non-Gorkha views the current situation…no matter how much you try to portray yourself as one…you remain a non-Gorkha;
4. You are free to suppost the cause of GL and I am free to oppose it…there is no dispute in that…but since you claim to be arational person (not in as many words but in your various posers)…is it too much to ask for your rationale to support the demand for the inclusion of Dooars-Terai_Siliguri?
5. Since this is a blog by Barun Roy, does Mr. Barun Roy take the responsibility for the hatred that is being spread against various communities by using this as a platform?

Dear Mr. Mukherjee,
We will have to understand one thing – both Gorkhas and Bengalese and now that Adivasis basically Rajbongshis, Totos, Mechs and Santhals… Gorkhaland is not about the division of Bengal. Why is there a need for Bengalis to hate Gorkhas or Gorkhas to hate Bengalis. Every time, leaders like Asok Bhattacharya or Buddhadeb Bhattacharya are saying Bengal cannot be divided they are enforcing a ‘colonialistic approach over Darjeeling Hills and Dooars Terai’. I do not support the demand for Gorkhaland because it involves Gorkhas… I support it because every people in this nation have a right to ’self determination’ and in the same instance I support the demand for Telangana, Codava, etc etc. I do not the support the secessionist movement of the North East whereby certain groups are striving to pullout from the Union of India. Gorkhaland is not such a movement. In Bengal the most exploited of the people are the Gorkhas, the Tribals of Dooars Terai including those of Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and North Dinajpur district. It is sad that the Communist Government and the party have been able to put a wedge between the Gorkhas and the Tribals there. This has set a bad precedent for the entire nation. Tomorrow the same ABAVP will start thinking in terms of a separate state of their and I will be the first one to openly support such a demand as I have today and will tomorrow support the demand for Gorkhaland.
The rise of the demand for Gorkhaland, Greater Coochbehar, Kamtapur and so on in West Bengal is due to the gross failure of the Communist led Government in Bengal. If the Government had been keen to develop and respond to the needs of not just the majority of the people in the state but also the marginalized aboriginal populations including the Mechs, Rajbongshis, Totos, Santhals, Lepchas, Gorkhas etc etc today, the state and more specifically the Communist Party of India Marxists Government in West Bengal would not have faced such a problem.
The inclusion of Dooars Terai in the Gorkhaland Map will better be answered by the people in GJM or other parties… remember I support the demand but do not chart the movement. Personally I believe that the Gorkhas, and the Mechs, Totos, Rajbongshis and the Santhals would have better chance under one state but in same vein that Gorkhas can have a separate state, the Adivasis can have their own state.
Conclusively, I believe, the Communist Party of India Marxist led Government in West Bengal has failed everybody not just the Gorkhas or the other marginalised people. They have failed Bengalis too. All people need is a better chance to prove themselves… ignoring people only leads to antagonizing them. This is what has happened. If today the Government tries to latch onto Bengali nationalism and force to put Bengalis in confrontation with other communities saying that the existence of Bengalis is in question because of ‘these’ people. It is only stupidity on their part. I believe we should also rise beyond it.
The time has now come that India needs to be federally restructured. In fact, in one of the seminars, I had proposed that all states be scrapped and new administrative district units be formed in the name of cities and towns directly administered by town and city councils instead of state capitals. Yes, there would hundreds of such administrative units but then again it would possible be the most prudent thing that could be done. I would call it a Republic of Districts. Would you support me on that. There would be no Bengal and certainly there would be no need for Gorkhaland, Telangana, Kerala, Punjab and so on … Are we ready for that! India would then be a real Secular and a non – racial Republic. Today it is a Racist, Linguistically divided Communal Democratically Chaotic Republic where one person is happy with a state named after his race but when some one asks for a state named after theirs it suddenly becomes anti-this and anti-that.
I believe and I have always endorsed that the only way to move forward is to re-structure India into a non-communal, non-racial, non religious and non -linguistic based units and the only way to do that is to convert into a Republic of Districts. I lovingly and imaginatively call it a United Districts of India. Ha ha ha ha!
Of course, I do not endorse nor accept any responsibility on what others have said or will say on this forum. Why should I? If someone or some people are involved in spreading hatred against various communities then I am ready to pull out the IP addresses and names of these individuals and give it to the Law Enforcement Agencies but if they are just replying to the allegations made by someone else then they have right to be heard. What are expressed in these forums represents the reality. And we must accept it. There is no end to hatred in this nation. We should instead look forward to answers instead of reaching out for each other’s collars, call names and try to hurt. The world is watching us… we might be one of the fastest growing economy in the world… sadly we are perhaps sitting on one of the biggest political bomb about to explode. The philosophy that governs our nation needs to be relooked and re-addressed. We need to look beyond the answers already like the ones in ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’, the four answers already there will not work…. We need to find new answers.
BUT UNTIL THEN I SUPPORT GORKHALAND BECAUSE IT REPRESENTS THE ‘RIGHT TO SELF DETERMINATION’ ASPIRATIONS OF THE GORKHAS.

Dear Mr. Roy,
I will take up from your closing statement…ASPIRATIONS OF THE GORKHAS…its just that…only aspirations of the Gorkhas….the Adivasis. the Koch, the Mechs and the Bengalis of North bengal have no place in the broader scheme of things.
Its true that the state govt. is trying to create a wedge between the communities..any state machinery would do that. But its also true that GJMM is trying to do the same by trying to co-opt the adivasis in their movement.
Isn’t it true that the foundation of Mr. Gurung’s movement is “difference” between Gorkhas and Bengalis(though I can point out numerous similarities, both cultural and linguistic as well as unique to these 2 communities)? Is that not a communal approach? Pray, how are Adivasis and Gorkhas similar? Culturally? Linguistically? Is it not true that GJMM is demanding for the inclusion of Terai and Dooars because they know pretty well that a state made of 3 subdivisions is not viable. And to what lengths are they ready to go? They are going to Jharkhand to get support for GL? What has Jharkhand got to do with this movement? Have they tried to speak to the Bengalis of this region? Or are we expected to pack up and leave the moment GL is formed? What about our aspirations. Why should a movement whose genesis lies in the lack of development(that effects everybody in the region irrespective of race and religion) be faught under the banner of a community?
I am sure if the demand had been for a separate state named “Darjeeling”…”Northern Region” or whatever the movement would have been more acceptable to us.

Dear Raja and Rahul,
Greetings from Darjeeling! You have simply read my last statement. I have repeatedly said in my earlier comments that I support the demand for Gorkhaland as I support the other statehood movement in the same vane as they represent the aspirations for ‘Right to Self Determination’. You must understand it is not about Gorkhas, or Codavas, Pandits (in Kashmir), Ladakhis (in J& K), Telanganas etc etc… in the present federal structure of our nation, statehood in the only means by which ‘right to self determination’ can be achieved. This is due to the mistake committed during 1956, when the nation was divided in linguistic basis. In a nation where more than 2000 languages and dialects were spoken, this was a blunder in a gigantic magnitude. The Fundamental Rights guaranteed by the Constitution of our Nation incorporates Right to Equality without any discrimination on the basis of religion, race, caste, sex, descent, place of birth, languages spoken and so on. Then how was it that the nation was divided in the lines of languages spoken. When we fill up the UPSC application forms or other Government forms, religion, mother tongue, place of birth has to be written, is it simply because the Government wants to know which religion, race, place or linguistic background we belong to. Friends, we are living in an unreal democracy… our Consititution is so thick a document because it has every law that contradicts the other. I repeat again Gorkhaland, Telangana, Codava etc etc are only tip of the iceberg. The philosophies governing the nation has to be re-examined and a new philosophy framed to replace it. Or else there is no end to statehood demands – and whats wrong to it… Why are everyone question the demand for Gorkhaland, Codava, Telangana and saying it should not be accepted… I think we should and must understand why did the demand for Gorkhaland, Codava, Telangana rose in the first place itself.

I can realise your words but if gorkhaland creats and dooars & tarai of bengal includes in it then you will find one more agitation is taking place in futire from kochbihar by rajbansis … then would you become a supporter of Greater kochbihar/ Kamtapore the one which will try to craving out from GL as they are also demand for separate state now itself!! Or you will support for another state if one day adibasis of dooars too want to come out from GL ??
According to you state on linguistic basis is the root of this kind of problem … yes friend you are 100% true…. cant we raise our voice to change all state’s name which are on lingua basis?? I wish it will touch hearts of many peoples and it will get more supports …. frankly speaking creating new states again on lingua basis wont solve the problem …. GORKHALAND name itself showing it is the aspiration of GORKHAS only not for others like koch, rajbansis or adibasis. Gorkhaland name itself is not accepted by majority of peoples except gorkhas of NB then ofcourse there would a possibilities of creating of greater kochbihar/kamtapore type of state craving out from GL if it creates …. so this is not the solution of present problem…
COVADA is a district of karnataka …. I think they are demanding for autonomous region within karnataka if I’m not wrong … their demand is not for separate statehood.

Dear Raja,
Bengal today faces the greatest number of statehood demands in the nation… Gorkhaland, Kamtapur, Greater Coochbehar etc. As I have already commented earlier… whether the Adivasis (Kochs, Mechs, Rajbaongshis, Santhals, Totos etc) will find find a better fortune in Gorkhaland or not is for them to ascertain. If GJM is demanding for the inclusion of Dooars Terai, then they are doing so based on reasons, social and political alike. I cannot respond on the social aspect of the same but I can say that politically Siliguri is Bengal’s Achilles’s Heal – Bengal would not want to give up Siliguri and the regions thereof and GJM knows that and they will use that region to hurt Bengal. The Communist Government in Bengal cannot directly engage Gorkha Janmukti Morcha either since that would put the party in direct warpath with all the marginalised people in the state and as such it has played the time test act of playing the Adivasis against the Gorkhas. Remember both the Adivasis and the Gorkhas are the most marginalised people in the region (especially north Bengal). Now there is a stalemate. However, what the Communist State Government does not realize that it may have been able to restrain GJM by placing the Adivasis before them, the Adivasis themselves will now want a better deal. This you must have witnessed in the recent Adivasis State Government Meet. Tomorrow the Adivasis may come up with a United Adivasi Land in Bengal. They might want to bring together all the Mechs, Santhals, Totos and Rajbongsis. These are all the aboriginal people of the Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri Dooars Belt. Instability in this belt would force Bengal in its knees. I think its better for all – the State Government, GJM, and the Adivasis to wise up and come up with a compromise… a Gorkhaland without Dooars Terai, A United Adivasi Land compromising of Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri Dooars belt and Bengal. There will be Bengalis in Gorkhaland, Gorkhas in United Adivasi Land and both Gorkhas and Adivasis in Bengal.
But then again, I will probably called a troublemaker know that I am giving wind air to fire. The answer to all these divisions is the annulment of states based on Linguistic basis and that means no Bengal, no Punjab, no Gurjarat and so on. A United Districts of India – the federal restructuring of India in the basis of true equality sans race, religion and linguistic basis.
P. S. The demand for Codava is for Statehood. It will actually called Coorg or Kodagu.

Dear Tatu,
I can understand you submission of Darjeeling being the second richest district in West Bengal It is absolutely true. In fact, Darjeeling District is much well off from the other districts in the State. Now for the fact, if Darjeeling District was a like the Rann of Kutch and still the second richest district in the State, I would have been the first one to say, the demand for Gorkhaland is wrong but it isn’t so. Development needs to be based to be proportionally based on the contributions of the place in terms of natural and human resources. Darjeeling District has the largest reserves of Tea, Timber and is also one of the biggest regions which draws tourism. Please go through my article ‘Business of Exploitation and Apathy in Bengal’s Colony’. I am reproducing it for your benefit. I think you will understand that Development has to be proportionale to economic contribution. In Darjeeling District’s case it is lopsided against Darjeeling District.
As for GJM leaders riding on 20 lac cars, I do not think any of the leaders albeit from GJM or others have 20 lac cars, if they had I would be the first one to write against. them.

Nice counter comments but not convincing enough. Mr Barun Roy has confessed that he is earning money through Beacon and all his portal. The question is: do you get it audited by any authentic agency? Earning money is tough but coming clean on your profit is bitter precisely because you have to have to give a part of it. If you don’t get it audited, I have an option for you and you don;t have to pay any tax for that. Any guesses??? Beggary because it does not contribute to any production.
Mr Roy is annoyed with me because he feels that my comments will expose him and deny whatever little he is earning and I am happy about it. The people needs to know what is Beacon’s and Mr Barun’s contribution to the Hills. We (Gorkhalis) are not for sale. We have been denied our rights for so long, please do not sale our dignity now!!!

If people think this is a profit motive site then they should stop reading all newspapers, watching tv, listening to radio…as all of them are earning money.
This site has brought alot of people together and raised much awareness about the GL cause and plight of gorkhas. We should take advantage of this rather than try to nit pick it. Making use of what we can to achieve a greater goal is not selling dignity, not doing it is having an unwanted, big, useless ego.

barun, you may be making money through this site..if you are not then you probably will ..nothing wrong with that..but i think people like krishna sharma will pop up now and then and the best way to silence them is to go through the due process ..so file your IT returns, run this site like any business enterprise..cyber laws in India are in a very nascent stage but there could be enough provisions in place to have this site run in a manner that is above reproach..in fact you may perhaps not have to pay any tax at all till the financial returns of this site is above a certain threshold…
by the way chettri jyu is perhaps the last person to be worried about the propriety of an enterprise that is not ‘audited’ ..in fact if he was to actually carry his zeal of ensuring that people pay what they rightfully owe to the government, then he would have his hands full..
as for his ‘commodification of gorkhas’ allegation is concerned..it is a very ingenious line of thought..but i don’t think he is worried about either that or the revenue of GOI..he is probably as worried about these things as Tatu is of the adivasis or the lepchas..

Dear PBKU,
Greetings from Darjeeling! I deeply appreciate your feelings and advice. I have never looked at Beacon Online and http://www.gorkhapedia.org as a means to make money. Sadly it does take money for everything including spaces update, server costs etc etc. And for now and then I have resorted to Donation campaigns and bloggers have overwhelmingly come to my aid. However, it has dawned on me that some would raise their voices and say that I am milking the sentiments of the people. I have decided that from now on I will never ever resort to seeking donations from our esteemed bloggers and friends. I will know on be putting in the money from my own pocket into research especially in Gorkhapedia.org…. in fact, I need people like you editing http://www.gorkhapedia.org because I believe Gorkhapedia can play a great role in the resurrection of Gorkhas as a Global Community and will go a long way in building up an authentic online resource centre for all Gorkhas and non-Gorkhas to rely upon. I have presently be researching on Captain Ram Singh Thakur and have been able to get in touch with his granddaughter. With her help we can document Captain Ram Singh Tahkur’s life for eternity. This is just a tiny speck in the fabric of Gorkha Universe though. I need your help on that. Gorkhapedia.org will not have any advertisements and will work as an non profit academic and resource centre. Whatever, advertisements that Beacon Online presently is receiving I hope will grow since this will also become a big source for revenue for Gorkhapedia.org.
As for operating both Beacon Online and Gorkhapedia.org as a business enterprise, I will have to accept that I am a poor businessman and have no such ability or aptitude. You will have to guide me in that if such a possibility exists. I would like to convert Beacon Online (The Himalayan Beacon) as a more interactive and greater reaching site encompassing all Gorkhas. Could you please, give me your feed backs on how Beacon Online can be improved. I will be very grateful.

Dear barun,
I understand and appreciate your thoughts and perhaps empathize with your predicament. Here you are trying to follow your passion. Making money is perhaps the last thing that you had in mind when you started off on this venture. Then suddenly your site starts to attract eyeballs. People visit it for all sorts of reasons. The number of hits increases exponentially. And finally mr Krishna chettri and others come along. Their posts presume that you are making money. They seem to hint at the fact that your USP is the commoditization of the Gorkha identity and other ancillaries that such an enterprise supports. They raise questions about financial propriety. And here you are caught in a bind. Let us recapitulate the basic postulates.
(i) You start a site which is an extension of your passion and your idea of social responsibility.
(ii) You haven’t in your wildest imagination expected to make money.
(iii) In fact you spend a lot of your own time and obviously money to make the site what you want it to be.
(iii) You feel you are doing something useful that will resonate with educated Gorkhas, so out of the goodness of your heart and a bit of naivety solicit for funds.
(iv) You make this appeal universal instead of reading responses for what they are worth and sending private messages.
(v) In the meantime let us not forget that your surname is ROY.
(vi) So people start to make presumptions.
(vii) You have genuine well wishers like JTM and Raja, but then there are other detractors too, who smell a rat.
(viii) Then suddenly you have a ‘eureka’ moment.
(ix) You say, if these fellows insinuate that I have been making money, when I haven’t made a dime. Maybe their insinuation is a self fulfilling prophecy. Maybe I will end up making money.
The point is that you will. You are in this business maybe a decade late but you will end up making money.
I may not be able to advise you on the specifics but here is a story.
Mr Krishna Chettri accuses you of commoditization of Gorkhas. Well the greatest business success story of this new millennium commoditized the whole world. They have an enterprise that is geared to make billions by ‘selling noun phrases’. This enterprise is called GOOGLE.
Unlike other people who started off on the internet and who did not have any clue how to make money out of it save rent space for adverts, these two ( Larry Page and Segei Brinn) realized that a search engine is an excellent clue to find out the preference of consumers.
So to cut a long story short, Google together with the results of your search also displays a number of sites that are relevant to it. Now you only have to fine tune it. For example if I type “Kurseong” , apart from sites relevant to that town, I also get ‘apparently’ helpful but meaningless ‘prompts’ such as WHAT IS KURSEONG? WHO IS KURSEONG? Etc. That is just hitting in the dark. You may perhaps offer to streamline that aspect of information.
Also if you try advertising in google, ‘singulars’ can be bought at a cheaper rate than ‘plurals’. This is because a singular noun is generic. If you wanted to know about a swiss watch, you would type ‘swiss watch’ but if you wanted to know about swiss watches , to compare and contrast so as to buy one, you search would be ‘referential’ and you would type ‘swiss watches’.
Any way to cut a long story short, you will probably have to start reading on how the internet is revolutionizing commerce. You may perhaps like to read stuff (which are available online) such as THE CLUE TRAIN MANIFESTO etc.
Anyway, you flatter me when you ask me these things.
The last thing I have done in my life is make money.
In fact I have not done any ‘last’ thing in my life. Is it because I live my life expecting that this moment will not be the last?
Any way, don’t take things seriously. And if life just gives you lemons, as the wag said, make lemonades. In the meantime don’t forget Murphy’s law or even the second law of thermodynamics.

Hi Barun,
I only have basic knowledge of HTML and I am sure that you know much better then me in this field. But still, what I felt about this site was this =
Many individuals who are not aware of Himalayan Beacon would tend to type in words / phrases (in search box) like =
News on Darjeeling , Darjeeling news, sikkim news, Gorkhaland, News from Darjeeling hills, news on sikkim, Gorkhaland etc. so these words or phrases (also listed below) should be included in your Header, Meta Tags and Key Words.
So when each time a person types in these terms, the search engine should list your blog in the first page of the search result itself (hopefully).
Because when I type the above (or below) words, your website does not show in the search results.
———-
Darjeeling news,
News from Darjeeling hills
news from Darjeeling
Sikkim news,
news from sikkim
Siliguri,
Gorkhaland
Gorkhas
Gorkha encyclopedia,
News from Himalayas
News and views from Darj/ Sikkim/ Assam…..etc.
—————-
The header of home page (“Himalayan beacon”) should included more words like Darjeeling ,news, Sikkim, Assam, gorkha etc.
I am aware that being affiliates for the banners in your site does not generate much money, but if more people come to your blog maybe it will.
Take care

Dear Mr. Rajneesh,
Greetings from Darjeeling! I completely agree with your. However, Beacon Online does not work in that way and differs in essence with the other sites. While other sites have Meta-tags which works like a directing device and when said “Darjeeling News”, Search Engines like Google or Yahoo automatically points at it. Beacon Online being constantly updated site instead uses Page Tags and hence every article published automatically gets tagged – which means that if someone is search for ‘Gorkhapedia’ it sends it to the pages with Gorkhapedia posts. Now this shows Beacon Online pages independently, while sites with Meta-tags are show in the first page but not repeated here each page in Beacon Online is treated as an individual entity. But as you can see this system has its pros and cons. While Beacon Online never shows on Google first page when you type ‘News Darjeeling’ but when you type ‘Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’ or ‘Communists Darjeeling’ or any other specific thread all the specific Beacon Online pages is featured independently in Google’s first pages. In fact Gorkhapedia and Beacon Online has better Google page rating than any other sites from the region when it comes to specific search thread. But as I said again, it also has its short comings.

Dear Mr Roy,
Media plays a big role and has been rightly acclaimed as the fourth estate of Indian democracy. However of late, it has been observed that they resort to false reporting and analysis, including the “The last nail on the coffin!” on your esteem portal with flashy coverage. I am certainly for the freedom of speech and expression and your analysis provides some momentous insight about the realm of politics. But I think one need to refrain from making personal attack against any individual, be it Dawa Narbula or Ghising. You have aptly underlined the necessity of social responsibility, but does it apply only to two individuals, Mr Narbula and Mr Ghising??? What about the media first which sensationalise every issue and event??? Agreed, Mr Narbula is carving for a second term and may forge an alliance with any political party, including the now defunct GNLF. Democracy secures that right for everyone. Even for you, if by any chance you want to contest election, provided you are a citizen of India. When an outsider like Mr J Singh can be trusted to carry forward the message of Gorkhaland, why not one amongst us, including Mr Narbula? Of late, I have observed hue and cry against a dedicated teacher, a humble lawyer and a committed representative of the people – Mr Dawa Narbula. I wish you could discern some light on his achievement for Darjeeling like Balason River Project, instead of muddling his image. I do hope to hear from you.

Dear Shelly,
Greetings from Darjeeling! And thank you very much for your queries. I agree with you to the fullest extent when you write “Media plays a big role and has been rightly acclaimed as the fourth estate of Indian Democracy.” I also agree with you when you say everyone should be morally obligated. However, my writings which seemingly appears to be personally against Mr. Dawa Narbula is not so. I am not against Mr. Dawa Narbula per se. Nor I have ever thought of gaining any personal victory by hurting others in any ways. I am a peaceful man and believe in logic. What I am attacking is not Mr. Dawa Narbula as a person but Mr. Dawa Narbula as a Member of Parliament. Tomorrow, if Mr. Jaswant Singh will not stand up to the promises he is making today, I will also be attacking him, not personally but surely as a Member of Parliament. What Mr. Dawa Narbula has done wrong is beyond becoming a ‘leader of the people’ he has resolved to merely become a politician. I have time and again interviewed him and he has resolved to remain detached from the people he represents. I have since the beginning of my blogging days attacked any leader whose decisions have ‘brought pain and suffering to people and have been detrimental to the aspirations of the people’. And this has included Mr. Bimal Gurung, Mr. Roshan Giri, Mr. Madan Tamang, Mr. R. B. Rai, Mr. Subash Ghisingh, Mr. Deepak Gurung, Mr. D. S. Bomzon so on and so forth. I must confirm that I am not a social activist, nor do I nurse a dream of one plunging into politics, I am just a simple blogger who likes to call spade a spade. If calling a spade a spade makes certain leader or politician unconformable, then certainly, there must be some truth in it.
Rest and all is the Will of our Lord Great God, it is upon him to Judge and pass sentences! We will all be standing alongside each other when the time comes.

Shelly, sorry to butt in here but your observation of Dawa Narbula – a committed representative of the people – is hard to digest for the people whom he represented. I will not counter the other two observations made – dedicated teacher and a humble lawyer – because I have no knowledge on those facets of his achievements. A true leader is one who is “in sync” with the aspirations of the people he leads or represents. Unfortunately, Mr. Dawa Narbula failed on that front. When the people raised a mass movement for Gorkhaland, he did not utter a single word – either for or against that movement. He kept quiet, very quiet. He pretended that the movement did not exist! Dozens of incidents happened, right from the Indian Idol contest to the problems in Siliguri and Dooars, but did we hear a single word on any of these issues from our honourable MP? What is the standing of a leader who feigns ignorance on peoples’ plight?
Barun has every right to put forth his views. Recently, a link to an older posting of this blog was made where Mr. Narbula left an interview with Barun mid-way, unable to answer some very pertinent questions related to his work in Darjeeling as an MP. We all must speak against those leaders who go against our aspirations. The leader is chosen by the people and not the other way around.

Hi Barun da,
I think you should take a look at one Bengal Tiger’s comment here,
http://beacononline.wordpress.com/2009/05/15/darjeeling-hills-discontent-between-hill-outfit-wings/#comment-68121
and take some action against him or atleast warn him. He has been spewing communal hatred against Nepalis for a long time, and his statement that Nepalis r meant 2 toil in the tea gardens are totally unacceptable. Please do something about it.
Thanks,

Hello
My friend introduced me to Sikkim, and truth be told, I was awestruck. I have been on the lookout for quite sometime now as to where I’m going to settle in life and start my career. And for some reason, my heart tells me Sikkim is the place to be. I don’t know where to enquire for details about Sikkim, so I come to you. Generally, I want to know how is the environment in Sikkim for outiders (but Indian) to come and set up business in Sikkim. I am an aspiring entrepreneur, a visionary, I have a vision, and I believe Sikkim is the right place for it. I believe I can do wonders for myself, Sikkim, and much more. I’d like to contact you personally to know more. If your willing to guide me, please contact me, I’ll be really grateful.
Thank you,
Peace be with you,

GORKHALAND SCORCHING AT THE DOMESTIC AIRPORT : 3rd DEGREE – Dorjay Tshering
Abstract, as it may sound. True as you see Gorkhaland was scorching and sweating at the airport.
On a fateful afternoon of June ’09 I had gone to receive one of my friend at the I.G.I. and what I saw was gruesome Arrived with their baggage’s and the face of excitement came the Pradhan’s,the Giri’s, the Lama’s and the Chettrie’s but to their extreme expectation and vision not a lone Gorkha Soldiers could be seen or even made their presence felt.
I saw Pradeep Pradhan with anxious face and mobile in hand swaying his head which of course –he had a good heck exercise. All with their baggage’s every one of them was engrossed in the frenzy thought for Gorkhaland looking around to see that the D.G.J.M.M. have come to receive them. They delayed by quenching their thirst with water but even when it was almost half an hour no one from Delhi turned up to receive.
Shame on our people, when national Gorkha leadership came to Delhi you people do not even bother. Finally I overheard Pradeep calling in Delhi “khai thimi haru ani katha chai gari” where you are people and where is the cab.
But——–saddened faces the national leadership hired the taxi from the IGI airport and thus ! headed some where else possibility to the HUDCO govt.quaters( next to Ansal Plaza)
This incident is crystal clear and reveals which reveals from readers view and perspective world wide that the Delhi GJM only makes their presence with a small lobby of cluster at the airport only when the national leadership(Bimal Gurung) comes on a visit to Delhi. The remaining secondary leaders are not even attended properly as I have watched this gruesome incident from a close angle.
This theory is not based on the circumstantial evidence this is simply an accident of birth and offering me an opportunity —– a green signal to proceed with the virtual truth. These “BUNCH OF FOOLS” at Delhi did not even to bother to receive the young and the aspiring Gorkha leaders on their arrival.
1st Degree of Suspect—–At the helm of the national politics the Congress has made a White wash .BJP a tie tie fish.
2nd Degree of Speculation——-How cares and why should we go when Bimal Gurung is not around these secondary leaders comes and goes.We are also leading the movement in Delhi so why should we go(considering themselves as the secondary leaders)….
3rd Degree of hypothesis——–10th of March 2010 where the vision the dream and the dead line for Gorkhaland remains..and as these Bunch Of Fools are aware that Congress is back in power and the chances for Gorkhaland is bleak.
#1. These bunch of foolish executive must be fasting and praying for Bimal Gurung’s good health
#2. As reiterated from the speeches delivered from |Bimal Gurung —I will offer to die if Gorkhaland is not created by 2010.
#3. If then Gorkhaland is not delivered on 10th of March 2010 then the movement of |Gorkhaland will ship – wreak in the midst of the storm.
These may be the possibly fear physochis that these Bunch Of Fools in Delhi are driven with.(as a reminder these people are not patriot, these bunch of fools are betrayers of the Gorkhaland movement)
Open Question to the Delhi GJM —-you people should learn politics from others.Your presence at the airport could have bolstered the moral and the inner spirit of these secondary leaders. I felt pity at these leaders especially Pradeep Pradhan and Amar Lama.
Without any fear of contradiction I still you people Bunch Of fools the reason being if and when the BHOJ (as was offered on the 31st of March) at Gorkha Bhawan then you people flocked in large number to masticate you foul smelling teeth to tear apart the mutton and the chicken. Recommendation next time when the secondary leaders come to Delhi they will possibly bring the Sausages the ham the bacons from Kevintors .It will be the right opportunity for you people to gather at the airport.(Food for Reception at the Airport)..
Lastly the disgruntled Delhi Gjm has of late formed the Nepali Young Professional now re- christened as Himalayan young professional at the same place where Gorkha janamukti morcha was formed with the same people. These guys as I over heard from a Bunch of fool at Lado Sarai that these people will celebrate the Bhanu Jayanti at the Gorkha Bhawan or at Humayun pur community Hall. Now who is Bhanu Bhakta?OH! That man WITH A SILLY CAP. Follow Shakesphere, follow Wordsworth, follow Witman. In an age or realization you people still follow Bhanu Bhakta The man with a silly cap. You people must be silly either. to be contd…..

Dear Barun,
Thanks for covering our club achievement last time(talking abt-Colordesign Gorkha Heroes Football Club winning DSA,championship for 2008 in New Delhi).
This year we are targeting big & that too for I-League & for that we need proper Publicity so that we can pull sponsors & fan following for the club. I think you are doing a great job for the commodity & surely help us to find the same. you can email me at b.s.mehra@colordesigntech.com or call me at 0987316664 for your suggestions about it.
I have seen that Gorkha are too good in Football due to inborn skills, controlled body structure can make them to be noticed in world map.
I am also looking for other influencial Gorkha Bhai to help us in this regard & feel that I am going to get some good responses from them.
Thanks, B.S.Mehra

Hey there Barun,
Your work is commendable. I came across your site while searching for information on Damber Singh Gurung. Truly Damber Singh Gurung is a forgotten hero of the Gorkhalis of Indian origin. Many may not be aware but he was the sole person who went on a campaign in those days to bring about an awareness among the Gorkhalis to make ration cards-a proof even today we can proudly hold up to make ourselves legal in India. In some parts of the North East where there are Nepalese staying, Damber singh Gurung is worshipped and his photo is kept along with the photos of Gods and Goddesses. This had many times been proud moments for my late father who was posted there in the Special Bureau Department of India in the 1980s. Being the grandaughter of this great figure makes me wonder how little I know of this great man. I had known that a letter had been written to him by Subash Chandra Bose but it was a thriiling experience to actually read it. I would love to know from where you got this. Keep up the great work!!!!
Cheers,
Sunita

By your age you are much junior to me, but by achievement you have surpasssed not only me but many people of my age, therefore, you are a forerunner and pathfinder in many fields in the sub-Himalayan area of India we live in.You are our hope for the present as well as for the future. I have no introduction or contact with you; but from a long distancce I have admired all that you have been doing in the field of journalism to the effect of highlighting many aspects of things so far neglected and misunderstood. In reference to the refugees from East Pakistan and their problems, Gorkhaland Movement, Kamatapuri Movement, KLO insurgency, Naxalite Movement, Greater Cooch Behar People’s Movement and the overall history of West Bengal since 1947 I request you to go through my book “West Bengal in Doldrums” published by National Library, Sibmandir and Siliguri.
