I have been reading Himalaya darpan in internet. I feel at home at present eventhough I am in the plains. One complain to HD. If we want to comment on any issue there is no place to put our comments.
March 6, 2008 at 9:18 am
Thank you very much for providing us an opportunity to read news of Darjeeling. I recall a year or two ago my only source of darjeeling news was biased bengal media (telegraph, statesman) but now we have something to call our own voice. Especially the issue of Himalaya Darpan is great addition to your blog. Keep up the good work. Goodluck in your future endeavors.

dear barun…is it true that the himalaya darpan management bought over sunchari and then presided over its funeral..if this is true , it is a very dangerous trend in hill journalism..something that you should also be wary of…some thinking people who see a danger in GJMM attaining the ‘absolute’ support of the gullible hill populace and ( rightly) cry wolf about it ..refuse to see an equally dangerous fact that a singular, ‘relatively’ powerful media house is ruling the roost and dictating the manner in which assent is being created in the hills toady…
March 9, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Dear Mr. Cephalus, thank you for your comment and a sad yes to your question. These are tremendously bad precedents that have been ravaging over the Darjeeling Hills and plains lately. Something that reminds us of Bill Gates attitude of destroying competition. I think by forcing one king to abdicate now we have ended up creating numerous kings. Will there be democracy and free press in the future… I seriously doubt so? I absolute agree with you and am also much disturbed at the singularly powerful media which could dictate everything in terms of what and what not to be reported. The nexus of these Media Houses and political parties could bring and end to democracy and freedom once and for all.

The Sunchari takeover by HD is very sad.On one hand we are tlking about democracy, freedom of speech and very lately lack of proper media in the hills and on the other we are loosing whatever little we had..Can there be freedom when there is no difference in opinion…So Darjeeling will hear only what HD wants us to hear….No matter whever comes..we should always stick to the basics of democracy..nobody is above it……

Hi Barun,
I was away from the net for quite sometime and didn’t know what was going on in Darjeeling (Hills. I am shocked hearing the news that Sunchari has been taken over by Himalaya Darpan. Is Hills repeating the history of Sikkim? What will happen to the freedom of speech? As some one in the mail rightly said people will be barred from getting the right stories either you believe Himayan darpan or keep quiet. As it is very much eveident from the past days news materials as well as the articilcle published in HD. No body talks about the GNLF views and we are made to believe whatever DGJM is doing it is right.
A suggestion!!
Why can’t someone like you start a Nepali blog where the other side of the story could be published (Just for the beginning)?
March 14, 2008 at 9:10 pm

Dear Mr. Jyoti,
Thank you for you input and I must say that i share your concern. A blog in Nepali is a wonderful idea but though I have authored two books in Nepali I will have to own up that they would have been almost unreadable if not edited by prominent Nepali Professors from Darjeeling. Blogging still remains a one man endeavour. By encouraging everyone I know to write and share their thoughts with us, I am trying to create a sort of Community Blog. At the same time, Blogging offers no financial revenue and people rarely tend to stick with it after they get diverted into some more commercial enterprises. What we require now is the initiation of a lot of bloggers in our community and basically from the Hills. So that we can get different and divergent views…two sides of the coin..so to say. I have always been of the view that no one individual or a conglomerate should hold complete and all power whether it comes to media or political power. We will all have to do our bit to protect freedom and not just the freedom of speech in the Hills.

I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY ON PREVENTION OF EX-ARMY MEN LEAD BY GJMM IN SILIGURI. I WAS PRESENT THERE ON THAT MOMENT. EX-ARMY MEN WERE JUST DEMANDING THEIR HOME LAND BUT SUDDENLY SOME HOOLIGAN COME WITH STONES IN THEIR CAR AND STARED TO THROW IT ON REORTERS AND JOUNALISTS, POLICEMEN AND ALSO TO THE COMMON PEOPLE.
RESPECTED MR. EDITOR OF HIMALAYA DARPAN, IN YOUR ESTEEMED DAILY ONE RESPECTED JOUNALISTS ASKED THAT IF THE STATE GOVT. FEAR THE GORKHA CAST?
THE ANSWER IS NO. GOVT. DO NOT FEAR THE GREATEST GORKHAS. THEY ARE SCARED OF THE HOOLIGANS IN THE NAME OF THE GREATEST CAST. SIR! DO YOU FORGET THE SILIGURI RIOT AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER 2007? THOUSAND OF MY GORKHA BROTHERS AND SISTERS MAY LOST THEIR LIFE IF THE GOVT.DO NOT TAKE THE PROPER STEPS.
LEADERS OF GJMM ARE TRYING TO TO DESTABILIZE PEACE AND HARMONY IN SILIGURI. I THINK ANY MOVE WHICH CAN BREAK PEACE SHOULD BE PREVENTED.
HOOLIGANS IN DISGUISE OF COMMON MEN SHOULD BE PREVENTED.

April 18, 2008 at 2:05 pm
The voice of gorkhaland sounds good. But we gurkhas must also remember a land without the economy in your hand is like you are fighing for the benefit of others. When it comes to politics darjeeling hill is dominated by the Gorkhas but how about the economy of our Gorkhaland? The economy of Darjeeling hill is predominantly dominated by other people. I have been to so many different parts of the world and gained the varieties of experiences and is my strong opinion we Gurkhas and Nepalese must have our land’s ECONOMY IN OUR OWN HANDS. It is vitally important!!!! How is this achieved the politicians have to have this in their agendas too.

Very true Bhaskar
April 18, 2008 at 7:05 pm
DEAR BHASKAR,
YOUR QUESTION ON ECONOMY OF GORKHALAND SHOULD BE ANSWERED BY THE LEADERS. BECAUSE WITHOUT THE ECONOMIC POWER IN GORKHA HANDS THE DREAM OF GORKHALAND CANNOT BE FULFILLED.
April 18, 2008 at 8:01 pm
Pranay you can not imagine how much tax and revenue does the bengal government collects from the darjeeling district even though the progress on different field that could have been done in the last 21 years is next to negligible so I don’t think we will have economic crisis in Gorkhaland.
because right now we are in a worse state of economy, just consider how many people got permanent job in the last 21 years and how many people are working on contractual basis the figure will be much more then the permanent basis.
Talking about DGHC, DGHC had the power to appoint group c d division but it never did. SO in a comparision when in the past the power to appoint group c and d division job were un utilized then think wht kind of progress had been going on other field so compare to that the path we are right now toward Gorkhaland will definitely give us identity and will also bring progress in the economic field.
April 18, 2008 at 8:08 pm
I think that your predictions and conclusions are baseless. If in 21 years things have gone wrong and the economy had slammed it was becasue of GNLF, Subash Ghisingh and DGHC. Why blame West Bengal? If the gardens are closed it is becasue of the unions and our own people who have destroyed the Tea industry.
April 18, 2008 at 9:18 pm
I never had mention who is to be blamed but if you want to be mention then ok it is true Subash Ghising is a black stigma and was big blockage on gorkhaland and i hope you have the update what has people done to him ( from a king to …) and for your kind information darjeeling district till now is under w.b government so had the government been so concerned for the people of the hill and its development then it could have intervene in the wrong doing of Subash Ghising and would have sack him rather then keeping mum and extending his tenure of care taker.
Have ever the bengal government ask for audit of the fund that was sanctioned to DGHC the answer is NO. SO both Ghising and w.b government is to be blamed for poor economic growth of the region.

suppressive treatment of the Bengal government towards the Gurkhas and the Gorkhaland movement makes us strive more towards our demand and helps us to reinforce our determination to achieve our goal of Gorkhaland. More Bengal government suppresses the Gorkhas more strength and determination it will provide us towards achieving our goal of Gorkhaland. They are showing their true colours. We are not Begalis as we don’t look like one of them!!! we don’t speak their language either!!! Even if we look at the map of India Darjeeling is not in West Bengal.

Dear Gorkha brothers,
Do u see the police restraining one chap(light green t-shirt) and the other in orange t-shirt?
Do u know what the Israelis did to the Nazis? They dug out all the Nazis and killed them. Is it time for us too to mark out these guys who are going after our cheli-betis? The Bengal Govt, CPIM,DYF have gone bonkers. Gorkhaland can no longer be achieved in peaceful ways. We have to give up the peaceful ways and teach the Bengal Govt and the CPIM stooges.
May 4, 2008 at 1:03 pm
YES MR. YK Shrestha, WE ARE FOLLOWING YOUR PATH. YOU WILL BE VERY HAPPY AFTER HEARING THAT WE HAVE STARTED THIS GREAT WORK BY THROWING BRICK ON BACKBONE OF SDO SILIGURI.
YOU SAID RIGHT. DEMAND OF OUR HOMELAND CANNOT BE ARCHIVED IN PEACEFUL WAY. SO LET US JOIN THIS POLITICS OF BEATING/LYNCHING/KILLING/!!!!!@@@@##$$%%^^&&**
May 4, 2008 at 4:29 pm
No, gorkha brothers we must not follow the pathe of violence. Now our movement of non violence is leading our agitation towards the right direction. The Begnal govennment is trying to entice us to the path of violence so we should be clever too and not be dragged into their trap. GJMM is leading this agitation in a democratic way and this is the only way we can prove that we Gorkhas can fight with our brain and pen too without using our Khukris. So these people will stop calling us CHOWKIDAARS. Our forefathers have proved themselves to be brave using their khukris now in the 21st century, gorkhas have to prove to be ‘KALAM VEERS’ and win our battles.
Jai Gorkha,
Bhaskar Tamang
May 4, 2008 at 5:04 pm
hey it feels great to hear that bricks were thrown, actually Khukuri is a better option. I totally agree with Mr. Shrestra and Mr. Shah. We should dig out these dhotis and colour our khukuris with their foul smelling blood. Anyone who comes in our way of achieving GORKHALAND should not be left alive. It looks like they cannot understand through peaceful ways so lets show them the meaning of violence. This is the time for all the gorkhas to wake up and show these Bongali Shitfaced beggars what are we made up of and what are our capabilities.

jai gorkhaland, i wonder whether really a supporter of gorkhaland or an a cadre of bengal gov. Who is highly paid to disturber our democratic movement for a state by provoking us to take the wrong path or may be a foolish person any ways u keep your ideology with yourself. We will achieve gokhaland by democratic means even if we have to sacrifice our life in doing so. And dont worry if u really want to kill somebody then u can use ur skill in kill cattel for meat in picnic after we get gorkhaland
May 5, 2008 at 12:34 pm
Really because of this all information it feels Home Away From Home. It would be better if more information from other newspapers or media would have been included.
May 6, 2008 at 6:03 pm
As for the appointment of group c and group d staff, yes the dghc had the power to appointment them but their salary and etc had to be given from the fund received by the dghc. If the chairman, councillors, secretary and cps had their willingness to do so than it would ve been done but they were never there for the general people anybody.
Chairman were busy with his mata n pita, most councillors were busy with their never ending marriages n affairs, secretaries well they were retired, n again tired by the dghc so they never had the will to do anything, they were just enjoying the comfort and the power thrusted to them as they had never enjoyed in their working days and the cps, he was here just for fun. The good Cps who did good for the dghc n the staff were transferred.
Its not so that people never got permanent job in dghc, there are some but they are handful in respect to the total no of contract employee. Ok if people were recruited again will genuine people get the job, its hard to say. You need to have someone high there or powerful or bag full of cash.

It is really astonishing that the ministers are worried NOW about the development of the hills. Is PHE minister Mr. Gautam Dev on holiday trip to Lolay gaon or on official tour?
Madan Tamang should change now. Instead of fighting it is better for him to support the movement if not just Keep quiet. The way AIGL is commenting it is not critical and positive critisism but smells jealousy.

Dear Barun Daju,
It’s really feels good to read the article like “EEKTAKO PRATIK - MOHAMMAD GALLI” when one is away from hometown. I really felt the tears in my eyes. “KHUSI KO AANSU”. But Daju, in The Times of India, Banglore Section, dated May 18, 2008 - there was a Heading PUSHED to the wall and the caption followed “Lack of employment and intense poverty are driving many women from the tea garden and fringe areas of Darjeeling hills into the flesh trade.” How we feel when we read these kind of articles. I know that media just impartial but who’s to be blamed for this? Can’t our media focus on the problem? Why they just try to be the part of problem as well?
Daju, these questions really haunts me and feel myself guilty as I’m too Nepali from Darjeeling. So, just help me with some of the answers and the persons to be contact regarding this matter. And through you I would like to inform all the Nepali how we’ve been treated in & outside our hometown.

Once again thank you very much for the wonderful daily update of Himalaya Darpan. And I haven’t got any answers or responses for the comments I did left couple of days back regarding the Article of Darjeeling Flesh Trade. Are you going to help me and everyone in this issue?
And regarding today’s issue - GJMM will uproot the DGHC but what about all the employees under DGHC? Will GJMM will give the job security? Are they going to give the daily bread to every family of Darjeeling? There are I guess more other things to do than to dissolve DGHC.
Love to hear comments from all to my personal mail at callme_niraj@yahoo.co.in

I suggest that we also have an english version of the Himalaya darpan so that everybody can read our news.
We insist on everything in Nepali which limits readership and awareness. English news items will pop up in any Google search. And books can also be circulated
Once a Gorkhaland leader was giving bhashan in Delhi. I asked him who here is going to able to understand what you are saying on the mike except for the gathering of 100 odd Nepali-speaking people. Even the Delhi journalists who came to cover the event went away as they could not understand anything. If our messages have to reach to all we also have to be able to express in Hindi and English.

When we talk of unemployment mounting high in Darjeeling, the sole responsibility goes to the West Bengal government and the dethroned leader of Darjeeling Subhash Ghising. What about those candidates who had passed the School Service Commission in 1998 ? I heard only few candidates are being appointed. Isn’t it unfair?
Please let me know.

If India made separate states such as,Chhattisgadh,Uttaranchal and Jharkhand that the demand for those states was probably commenced far later and behind the movement for Gorkhaland, why they are waiting for next Sunday for inevitable condition? It would be better to start the potential reconciliations among majorities and minorities of communities so as to achieve highest possible outcome of decentralised effectiveness and the exercise for power of proper people.
June 13, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Well Jai Gorkhaland,
Don’t be carried away by the rethorics of that small time thug & your leader Gurung, Pray that you live & don’t starve to death, then only you will be able to use your khukri to cut the Dhotis. We at Siliguri are going to block your stincky Darjeeling Hills for complete cone month.

As the agitation for the demand of gorkhaland has resumed once again we must not compromise now with the government even an inch shorter than that at any cost. We must refrain ourselves from any violence which CPM is trying to push us towards. It’s the time we rather use our brain than Khukri. We must prove that we too can use our brain and non violence, tolerance, persevernace should be our principal mantras. It’s a very good sign this time that we all the Gurkha brothers are one in this agitation and we should remain intact and shoulder all the difficulties together to achieve our goal. GAHIRAI MA DUBDAI NA DUBA DUBI SAKEKO CHAU BHANE MOTI NATIPI NA FARKA. ANUCHAN DHERAI UKALO ORALO EKNASH PAILA CHALDAI JAU, LAKCHYA MA PUGNA SAJILO HUNDAINA ATIYEKO MANLAI SAMALDAI JAU. JAI GORKHALAND.

I SECOND TO YOUR COMMENTS…
take our word for it dude!! You NB people are better of with us than down south. Chances of development is larger with us than to align with kolkatta, as they have done nothing in the past three decades, Be with us for a year and you will see the area become a fifth metro, as the area is stragetically important to seven NE states and two foreign countries.

Dear Barun,
I would like to to thank you on this wonderful service you are doing with Himalayan Darpan. Keep up with the good work and lastly Thank you for your services , may you go a long way, God Bless You.

Dear Brothers,
I think all these hue and cry lies with a single fact of Demanding Siliguri & Duars in Gorkhaland. In Duars we comprises of a 20 to 25% at best. I reside in Duars. I have a feeling that, apart from the Bengalis, we are also antagonizing Adibasis & a Few Rajbangshis live in this area. The Fear of these ethnic peoples are that, once it comes under Gorkhaland they all will be dominated by us.
Like DJ most of these places once belonged to Sikkim.
Anybody like to provide a sound logic in favour of this demand? Why we should demand this place when we are a minority here! Please provide reasons, so that we may put it up to others. Concrete things you know, not craps like CPIM, Underdevelopment etc. etc. Cause not all our oppositions are CPMs.

We Gorkhas have equal rights in our India like all other common Indian peoples as our ancesters have shaded their blood to make India free, why don’t they count our ancester’s sacrifices, how did Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose formed “AZAD HIND FOUJ”, originally who composed music for the National song of India ? Central govt.of India should come forward for talk as demanded and honor our ancester’s sacrifices by crating GORKHALAND.
June 20, 2008 at 8:04 am
Jai Gorkha,
I am pretty sure, majority people from Siliguri (illegal immigrant from Bangladesh)can’t sing India’s National Anthem. Indian Begali’s are not able to see problems coming from these illegal aliens. One day they will realize but then it will be too late.
Today they are the one to tell the original Indian Gorkha (Born Indian Idetity)that we are not Indian. West Bengal Government ruling party should be ashamed of this. Just for the shake of the Vote they are selling our (Mother) India. Shame on you.
Wake up Indians (Indian Begali) understand the depth and fight against this corruption. We know that you love this country and you support our fight for righteousness.
Bandematarm!! Jai Hind!! Jai Gorkhaland!!

When Indian became Independent from Brithis rue. Indian was divided into to parts India and Pakistan. During division Bangladesh decided to be the part of Pakistan and it was know a Easter Pakistan. Later on 16 December, 1971. Eastern Pakistan became Bangladesh. West Bengal Govenment should not forget these people are the ones who killed innocent Indians and raped our sisters and mothers.
Today they are claiming themselves as Indians after sneaking from our border. If Govt. of Indian and West Bengal does not stop this our contry will not be safe from terrorist activities.
Where as we Gorkahs became Indian family together with our land. We did not sneak from the barbed wire. We became part of Indian before India became Independent with dignity and we are proud to be Indian and Gorkhas are living and serving our Motherland Indian with full integrity.
No who are the real Indians, Bengali (immigrant from Bangladesh) or Gorkahs??
Bandemataram, Jai Hind , Jai Gorka.

jai gorkha,
we are born indian even in the army we are the first one to sacrifice our life for our motherland “India” .From the start of Independence and to the kargil war our gorkhas have given sacrifce to save our motherland. But the incident which took place at siliguri when the ex army was beaten up badly nobody took the matter seriously it is now become a high time for gorkhas to demand our selfrespect and dignity which was lost during from the time of Independence.

SIKKIMESE LEADERS ARE TOO PROUD OF THE FUND THEY ARE GETTING FROM CENTRAL GOVT.
DO U KNOW GUYS WHY SIKKIM IS GETTING AWAY FROM THE GORKHALAND ISSUE? OF COURSE THEY HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO SHOW THEIR BOSSY FELLINGS. WE SHOULD CLOSE DOWN THE NH 31A COMPLETELY AND LET TMEM FELL THE PAIN THAT WE ARE GOING THROUGH FOR SO MANY YEARS. SOME OF THE MINISTER FROM SIKKIM HAVE SO MUCH MONEY THAT THEY CAN SPEND 23 THOUSHAND RUPEES JUST TO BUY ONE JACKET SOME WHERE IN FORIEGN COUNTRY. WHEN THEY ALREADY HAVE SO MUCH, WHY WOULD THEY BOTHER TO SUPPORT OUR ISSUE! CHAKKA JAM HAI CHAKKA JAM!! LA JA TA FOREIGN COUNTRY VIA NATHULA PASS. WE R THE PART OF SAME COUNTRY,COMMUNITY AND RACE THEN WHY THERE IS SO MANY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN US. KAY HAMI KANCHI AMA KO SANTAN HO RA?

June 24, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Hello guys, do you know that soon Sikkim will not need the NAtional Highway (NH-31A)? How? Well they have asked an Amercian company to undertake a feasibility study for digging a tunnel through the hills of Darjeeling commencing from somewhere near Pakyong. It will come out somewher in the Duars and then the trip to Siliguri will take less than an hour! Then what purpose will blocking NH-31A serve????
June 24, 2008 at 9:33 pm
Das Munshi is not to be trusted…what action did he take against the Radio jockey - Nitin aka Jonathan brady or his radio channel ???ZILCH…all he said ws ‘We are THINKING about banning the channel” well tat’s wha he left it at…THINKING….nothing happened to the channel? No censure…n now he’s saying he is hopeful about a solution for us Gorkhas…that man is not to be trusted.
June 24, 2008 at 11:06 pm
Sanam, I have heard about the plan but I seriously doubt it will happen in our lifetime. Its like the airport project thats been in the pipeline for well over a decade - maybe two - I think it was started when Gulam Nabhi Azad was the Aviation minister ( remember him ?).
SIkkim needs NH31A as much as it needs to have healthy ties with the imminent Gorkhaland. Mr. Navin and others, I think Sikkim does support the movement and they do co-operate. But, when you call a strike (which is in my book not the approach to take), why should SIkkim call a strike? Agreed, when you get Gorkhaland, YOU will get Gorkhaland..then, Sikkim will be next to Gorkhaland but Sikkim will not benefit so directly. If you want to follow a leader blindly, why should Sikkim follow him as well? Can Sikkim not choose and be more discerning about its future? Please try and understand the situation that we all are in - ‘each playing his part - we have our exits and entrances’…
June 25, 2008 at 1:24 am
Im really excited about Gorkhaland. It’s been long I had stopped thinkin this stuff. Keep going people we have tons of support from Nepalese in country and abroad as well. No matter whether Nepali Gov supports it or not we are with you. Make it peacefull and acheive your goal. Don’t restrain using anything to get the statehood.
All the best.
