People are so much panicked. Who is responsible for it? a abstruct is being cited from free wikipedia.” Since late 2007 the demand for a separate has been started more intensely and growing by the renegade GNLF leader Mr. Bimal Gurung a ex-criminal and contractor (murdered atleast 7 bengali people in GNLF movement time in late ’80s) under the newly formed party called Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM)”. Dear Sir,
This is in connection to the article posted by Mr. H. Adhikary, “ Is gorkha land An Unjustified Demand?” I humbly like to disagree his logic as he mentioned “ crucial component of India’s armed forces”; there are other brave regiments in Indian army.
The Gorkha regiment is only a part of Indians regiment. Actually the Britsh introduced the Gorkha Regiment. But the term “ Ghorkha” is used improperly by the British because they actually recruited a few warrior tribes ( Jati?) of Nepal who subsequently proved to be great warrior. During the freedom struggle have any Gorkha opposed the British to use the term Gorkha Regiment? – To my knowledge no Gorkha have ever put objection to use the term, because within the fallacy of the term they expected to get some job in army. Recently it is noticed that MNO is growing strong in Nepal and they are trying to establish that only 20% of the population in Nepal are only Gorkha. This greed of the gorkhas(socalled) made them unpopular to the Jatis in Nepal as well as to the other tribes in North Bengal (The Anandabazar, siliguri, 30th Jul).
The author should know the Khalisthan movement is foiled in India in spite of the fact that the Sikhs are brave and have a profound contribution in the freedom struggle and in every stages of metamorphism of the Indian history down to the present time.
Now the procedure of allotting a state-hood the Central Government has nothing to do unless the state desires. Therefore, the author inappropriately referred “ New Delhi need to understand ………..”
Moreover, on the ground of external security reason no state was created under Indian Union neither it is necessary in the context of Globalization.
And above all inasmuch as this part of W. Bengal is a multiethnic region there is no need to grant a land to a particular ethnic group. In India no state was created on ethnic basis.
To the contrary some ethnic groups prefer to live with the mainstream societies. Some authors along who advocate about the Gorkha land do not have the knowledge that the Bengali people are not coherent in ethnic, religion, origin, language and nationality but one thing is that the are Bengali.

When it is Bengalees, they are REFUGEES, so India has the reponsibilty to feed them. Same way, ur so-called Bhupalees too are refugees, so they have right to settle as you Bangladeshi refugess.

It’s a case of Heads-YOU WIN and tails – I LOSE as far as you are concerned. Man, Bangaldeshis can settle in West Bengal, agreed. Go on settling them man, one day all of you will be mias. We came with our land to India, unlike you guys who left your land there and came “khali haath” to settle in others’ land. You people have been land grabbers from time immemorial. Dear D.Senupta Da,
Listen to Indian “Freedom Strugle History” from my perspective. Shall I start with “East India Comapny” & their Chamchas? It was Calcutta which alloweded English to enter in our country. Bengali Babu’s were busy SERVING them for more than 200 years, then came Tilak and Namjoshi (fool who said “what Bengal thinks today India will think tommorrow” & guess what they are still thinking that) for starter.
For your kind information It was India which was DIVIDED not Bengal and a person doing that was PUNISHED by Marathi & not BENGALI, (ref. M.K.Gandhi)
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Rose but Failed ask me why? He was not ready to SPILL his blood. ” Give me blood & I will give you Freedom” You got it? I still have relatives in BURMA ( Fools who went along (NSB) Azad Hind Fouz. Then who gave Blood that time? It was Gorkhas & Marathas not Bengalis.
When British left Calcutta it was a FINANCIAL capital of India. But look what has happened to whole of West Bengal and where rest of India has Progressed? Now don’t compare yourself with UP, Bihar Orrissa. If you dare to compare yourself with Gujrath ,Maharashtra & Karnataka.
This is BLOG here you are not supposed to show fingers at others as three will be towards you. Speak your mind but with KNOWLEDGE.
Last but not least Please read “White paper” (Its a Official Document in Govt. Gazzette) issued by then CM Sri. Jyoti Basu on 28/10/1986, which clearly says that Darjeeling & Terai was never a part of West bengal. If that’s a CASE how come you are trying to say that Gorkhaland is Division of West Bengal?
Please explain.

I have lots of bengali friends, but none of them seem to be like some of you who are in this blog. Sometimes, I wonder and start thinking whether the bengalees have changed, then suddenly I realise that all my bengali friends were/are sons of the soil unlike most of the bangladeshis/progenys of bangladeshis in this blog.

Well Pseude, no one disagrees to that and that’s a historical tragedy. Your parents came from Bangladesh, I/we have no issues with that. In fact, no one would have issues with that. Issue is with the ongoing illegal flow of Bangladeshis till date. I think no one would have issues with the recent hindu migrants too as we/all the political parties understand that they are being persecuted in Bangladesh. But, what about the hordes of mias coming into our land? What has happened to Malda, Parganas, Coochbehar etc and Assam/Tripura? True, there have been illegal migrants from Nepal too, but unlike u guys, we have been against that all along. Sikkim doesn’t allow them into their state. Moreover, most of these migrants are daily wage earners who go back to their own country (nepal)after making some money. But, what about bangladeshis? They come here and settle down permanently changing the demographic profile of the place. That has already happened to Silgarhi. May be in Silgarhi there are more Bangaldeshi hindus settled than the mias, but then why go on accepting them even after 60 years? We have sympathy with them being them hindus, but—–.It’s not only us, you guys too will have problems if this is not checked permanently.
Keep your hands on your heart, dig the history, read it and see whom did Silgarhi belong to. You might as well say that it’s difficult to get things undone now. If we are demanding Silgarhi now, what is the problem with you all? You will still be in the majority and no one is going to drive away no one. So, why this paranoia? Gorkhaland as a state would be viable only if Silgarhi and Dooars are included. As a result, all of us would prosper. Think from that perspective.

Dear Shresttha as Thakares are Maharatrian I am Bengali. We are not emigrant from Bangladesh.
Long before the British came in this part of India we are living here but we prefer to accept the main stream living style and proudly call us Bengali Indian. Ethnic identy is not so important in the Indian life style.

YK, the ongoing immigration from Bangladesh is 99% muslim (mia bengalis) and we dont have any sympathy towards this. These immigrants find it much easier to settle here in West Bengal because of same language and even same religion in border areas like Murshidabad or Malda. Even Assam has been unable to check this and I’m sure you know that.
Its completely wrong to assume Bengali hindus support this when they themselves were thrown out of their homes by these mias once upon a time. However owing to vote bank politics and other dynamics, most parties as you well know are turning a blind eye to this issue.

Good morning Nishoo and namaskar Pseude bandhu,
As I said yday, the people who have been calling names and saying that Nepalese are coming to Silgarhi and settling down is wrong. 99% of them are daily wage earners, labour class and they have no way/resource of settling down here. If you find Gorkhas settling recently here, they are 99% from North Eastern states and there are Nagas, Manipuris and Arunachalis settling down here. The Gorkhas from North Eastern states are 99% ex-servicement who have served the country.

The Self-Ironical Tradition in Bengali Literature
By the grace of the Almighty an extraordinary species of sentient life has been found on earth in the nineteenth century: they are known as modern Bengalis. After careful analysis zoological experts have found that this species displays the external bodily features of homo sapiens. They have five fingers on their hands and feet; they have no tails; and their bones and cranial structures are indeed similar to the human species. However as yet there is no comparable unanimity about their inner nature. Some believe that in their inner nature too they are similar to humans; others think that they are only externally human; in their inner nature they are in fact beasts.
Which side do we support in this controversy? We believe in the theory which asserts the bestiality of Bengalis. We learnt this theory from English newspapers. According to some redbearded savants, just as the creator had taken atoms of beauty from all beautiful things to make Tilottama, in exactly the same way, by taking atoms of bestiality from all animals he has created the extraordinary character of the modern Bengali. Slyness from the fox, sycophancy and supplication from the dog, cowardliness from sheep, imitativeness from the ape and volubility from the ass—by a combination of these qualities He has made the modern Bengali rise in the firmament of history: a presence which illuminates the horizon, the centre of all of India’s hopes and future prospects, and the great favourite of the savant Max Mueller.

We Bengalis
Bangla is the 7th most spoken language of the world, that is more than the number of people speaking russian, japanese or german! So when did this language come into being and who are the people speaking this language? What is their origin and basic culture? These questions were prompted by my nanaji’s understanding that bengalis were actually a “lutera” tribe in earlier times!!!
Obviously history coursebooks are the last place you look for such answers. I did some research on this and came across some interesting observations and inferences.
History of Bengal
If we look at history, there is mention of Vanga (South Bengal + Bangladesh) + Anga (North Bengal) in Atharvaveda, along with Magadha (Bihar). They are a part of the solah mahajanpadas (16 great nations of the indian subcontinent) in 600 B.C. ReThe mahajanpadas are the first example of democracy in the history of the world. In hindu mythology epic The Mahabharata, Duryodhan had made Karna the King of Anga. Mahabharata (I.104.53-54) and Puranic literature (Matsya Purana: 48.19) attest that the name Anga had originated eponymously from the name of prince Anga, the founder of the kingdom. Matsya Purana describes the father of this eponymous hero as the chief among the demons (danavarshabhah).
Later, Bengalis were ruled by hindu kings, then buddishts, then muslim kings, and then the britishers. The first buddhist king of Bengal of the Pal dynasty, came into rule by election in 750 A.D., the first resurgence of democracy in south asia. But if you look at the history of bengal, it is not a part of a large empire for the longest times in history. If a large empire was breaking up, bengal would be one of the first to break apart. They had their own territory, often broken into smaller parts.
The fighting spirit of bengalis lived on. The idea of raising an army to fight the huge British empire could only have come from a true Bengali like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. People just 5 years back burnt an atrocious and exploitative zamindar alive in a bengal village. Even today, there are no pick-pockets in Bengal because if one is caught, the matter never reaches the police or court. The public beats the criminal to death on the spot! As i write this piece, army is being called into the city of Kolkata to control the mobs that are protesting against the communist party ruling Bengal for the past 30 continuous years. This is just the second week of the protest!
Economy of Bengal
The trade was flourishing with other parts of the country and the world. Champa, the capital of Anga was known for its wealth and commerce. The Mughals called Bengal as the “Paradise of the Nations” after being impressed with its trade and wealth. Farming was indeed one of the major activities of livelihood.
Geography of Bengal
Bengal is situated served by two huge rivers, Ganga and Brahmaputra. Both of them meet at the delta and merge with the sea. This is the mix of the marshy and forested area of the Sunderbans. Though rivers formed a major mode of transport in bengal, the terrain was so unique that only the locals of the area could fight a war there and win.
Religion of Bengal
History shows us that bengal on the average had been a hindu state in ancient times, then buddhist in early medieval times. There was a resurgence of hinduism at around 1000 A.D., followed by influx of islam. It is worth nothing that the caste system though observed in bengal, is not staunch at all.
If we look at the calendar of bengalis, we are always a day behind the lunar calendars followed in north india. In fact, the bengali calendar is said to be the only living remnant of the Tarikh-i-ilahi of Akbar the Great. Baisakhi, the new year day comes a day late in bengali. Bengalis do not pray to Lord Ram during Dusshera, but instead pray to Goddess Durga on the same day of Vijay Dashmi. On the day of diwali, bengalis do not celebrate lakshmi puja like the banias of north india. Instead they celebrate Kali Puja on the day of diwali with mutton/non-veg being a compulsory part of the prasad. Interestingly, the bengalis primary pray to war goddesses and the main festivals are to celebrate triumph in war.
It must be noted that it was in bengal that religious reform movements like Brahmo Samaj and abolition of archaic anti-female religious rituals like sati and child-marriage were started in Bengal, notably by Raja Ram Mohan Roy. Even today, liberal view islamic writer Taslima Nasreen lives in Kolkata, not in any muslim country.
Music and Dance of Bengal
Bengalis never had a classical music or dance form. It was all folk music and dance. The formal music emerged only in the late nineteenth and early 20th century with Rabindra Sangeet of Nobel Laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore.
Language of Bengal
The bangla language started emerging at around 1000 A.D., at the same time as that of the resurgence of hinduism. It is worth mentioning that bangla is closer to sanskrit or shudh hindi, not khadi boli. There are probably above a 100 dialects in bengali. But bengali, unlike hindi and like english, is a unisex language. The vocubulary is not very large and the words are sweet sounding. Interestingly, bengalis pronouce ‘V’ and ‘BH’ exactly the same inspite of having two different alphabets for it in the devanagari script. It is to be noted that a proper script of bangla was developed by Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar only in the 19th century.
There are two more things to note about the bangla language. Bangla unlike english and like hindi, has three sets of addressing styles, mai, tum and aap. Plus, unlike hindi and unlike english, spitting and throwing has the same corresponding word in bangla. Obviously, there is no epic in bangla!
Sciences in Bengal
If you have heard of Indian scientists, you must have heard of Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose and Meghnad Saha. And if you are well-read, you must have read about Bose-Einstein theory and Bose-Einstein condensate! This emergence of scientific education in bengal started in English, not in Bengali. The bengali script had just taken form, let alone knowledge being present in bengali language!
Households and Culture of Bengal
The Bengali household is unusual compared to the other indian ones. The females have a far greater voice in the house and society. It is only the bengali husband that is known to be beaten up by his wife. This sense of violence is demonstrated in bringing up children as well. How many children would have heard the following dialogues on almost a daily basis from their parents while being disobedient:
1. Eat your food or i’ll stuff so much food in your mouth that you will never be able to open it your entire life
2. Come here quickly or i will smash your head into the wall
3. If you do not study hard, i will bang the saucepan hard on your head and break it.
You would agree that such children would only be bengali.
Moreover, even in the early 20th century, Tagore’s stories talk of a girl and boy sitting all night in one room and studying together. Too modern for India even now right?
So who is this bengali we all know? He is a human being who is a genetic mixture of aryans, dravidians, chinese and malays. It is the geographical area where all these human sub-species meet and mingle. He is a fierce warrior who has villages named golakaata (neck-slicked), pota-paadaa (buried-alive-colony) and mathaphaata (smashed-heads). He was influenced by many religions and cultures but still managed to stay independent. That is why the caste system of north india/aryan hindus could never grow strong. Bengalis fought a lot among themselves too, that is why even today bengalis are never a good linguistic political force/party. The bengali tribes were brought together by the Britishers who first captured trade and then power. That effect of english education is seen on the formalized unisex language and the modern nature of bengal households. The emergence of music, arts, social sciences and other intellectual activities in bengalis was a result of the primary activity of war being taken away from them. All this happened just about a century ago!!!

Called Bengalis, Malaysian Sikhs walk out of function
Malaysia Sun
Monday 14th April, 2008
(IANS)
A group of Malaysian Sikhs walked out from a function when Perak state’s chief executive referred to them as Bengalis.
Perak’s Mentri Besar Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin made the gaffe Sunday when he wished the Tamil community ‘Puthandu Vazth-uka’ or Happy New Year followed by ‘Happy Vasakhi to the Bengali community’.
‘For generations, Sikhs have bit their lips when mistakenly referred to as Bengalis. Many usually excuse the gaffe by ordinary folk who do not know any better,’ media reports from the Perak capital Ipoh said.
Jamaluddin admitted in an SMS to the New Straits Times newspaper that he had made a mistake in referring to Sikhs as Bengalis.
Monday is the first day of the Baisakh month as per the Hindu calendar. It is also the Tamil New Year. For Bengalis across the world too, it is New Year’s Day or Poila Baisakh.
Sikhs are Punjabis separated from Bengal by more than 1,500 km in India, the newspaper commented.
In Malaysia, Sikhs have been mistakenly referred to as Bengalis for decades, it said, offering no explanation as to why this has been happening.
Narinder Singh, 38, who came to shake hands with Jamaluddin and congratulate him on heading the state government after the election last month, left shortly after the comment.
‘Sikhs are the ones who celebrate Vasakhi, not Bengalis. Can’t he get that fact right? I am terribly disappointed with him,’ he said.
Harbhajan Singh, 32, said Malaysians, especially political leaders, should know the difference between Bengalis and Sikhs.
Dheer Singh, chairperson of the United Perak Sikhs Organisation, a consultative umbrella body representing nine Sikh-based voluntary organisations in the state was also upset.
‘Today we can learn about anything and everything from the Internet. There are many websites on the Sikh religion and the Sikh people. I feel sad that even though Sikhs have been in this country for close to 150 years, Malaysians still think we are Bengalis.’
Dheer said while many Malaysians may trivialise such references, the fact remained that the two communities were totally different in terms of religion, culture, and language.

This anecdote is of Bihari-Bengali linguistic misunderstandings. It is about the spelling of the word ‘ assassination’ . A boy who was having trouble remembering the sequence of letters was provided with the following formula in Bengali: Gadhar upurey gadha, tar upurey ami, amar upurey nation (an ass upon another ass, followed by me, followed by nation.)
Dhritiman Sengupta said
Dear Readers,
I thought I should be silent for some days. But now I understand I must share few salty truths. Let me put a series of political events that took place in the middle of 19th century. We notice annexation of Bengal ‘Duars’ during 1841-65 from Bhutan. The East India Company turned to Assam for tea plantation in 1833. The same speculations on the economics of tea plantation ‘Duars’ became lucrative to the British since the clearance of dense forests in this region was expected to gain revenue from timber and also in the reverse way make the place well suited for cultivation of tea. To clear these dense tracts, the forests, the forest tribes like ‘Meches’, Garos, Cacharis were expected to migrate into this region as the labour force. After a number of battles with BHUTAN, the British conquered seven ‘Duars’ in Assam and elven ‘DUARS’ in Bengal.
The local people of ‘Duars’ if you say were the ‘Mechis’.
HOW DOES IT COME UNDER THE MAP OF GORKHALAND??
Sensible bloggers do react!!

if that is the case… then how on earth is it a part of communist Bengal till today. Free Duars. Duars se Bengal hatawo aur Duars bachawo.

Dear Dhritiman,
Here’s a sensible blogger to comment on your point.
No need to share your “salty truths”…which actually should have been “bitter truths”. The annexation of Bengal Duars from Bhutan by the British, you have said. Therefore, logically, Duars, if it cannot be admistered properly, needs to be returned to Bhutan or given up to Gorkhaland. Why the bloody hell is the Bengal govt. messing up with the poor tribals and Gorkhas living there who, as you should be knowing, are dying of starvation? Let the govt. give up on the population there but they won’t because they aren’t interested in the exploited and suppressed population there but in the land from which they are reaping a grand harvest.

At a hot sunday of July, 2008:
At Jalpaiguri District of North Bengal on the Shraban Sankranti the Ma-Manasa or Bishahari Puja ( The Godess of Snakes) is celebrated with much reverence. In summer snakes are worshiped in different parts of India also. I have seen some snake charmers in different part of North Bengal showing charms in the summer seasons. Some of them even put the snakes in there mouth as if he would swallow it.
There are many stories about the snakes and snake charmers. One unsolved popular puzzle is,- What will happen if two snakes begin to swallow each other through their tails?
People may now have the opportunity to get the answer at Katmandu, in Nihita Biswas and Sobhraj episode.
Or at Siliguri-Jalpaiguri, if another Morcha Movement is staged at the foot hill!

Almost more then 95% of the news on your blog seems to be more of an echo from other news groups. It hardly makes sense. I do appreciate your previous blog articles, then the recent ones.

Dear Mr. Chettri I agree with you. But I am now trying to come up with a broader picture of things. I promise you though that I will come up with more of my own views and inputs. Please bear with me. I am not that well and am presently forced indoors on Doctor’s orders.

A great blog and an enlightening thread!!! Quite unmatchable in quality I must say and linguistically profound. I have saved a copy in my local disk to refer to later and to show to my friends elsewhere.
Also I learnt the new concept of “All Bengalees are Bangladeshis”, thanks for this!!
May the fire keep burning for ever!! Great job and keep it up!!
Thanks (To the Editor [for maintaining the thread unedited] and his readers)!!
P.S I am also a Bengalee and eagerly awaiting some nice and selected words directed to me.

Hey Santanu,
There are always some rotten people in every community, right? Pls go thru’ the blog at leisure and you will find some bengali intellectuals (not only the bloggers) calling Gorkhas as Nepalese/foreigners. So, what do you expect from the Gorkhas ? Bouquets? You will get the brickbats too. Don’t you? And yes, pls agree with us that the majority of the bengalees in North Bengal (specially Silgarhi) are BDs. Don’t you agree with that? Let’s have a healthy blogging instead of just trying to rip off each others undies

Shame on the name of Gorkhas!

Friends I am a Nepali. My forefathers were in the profession of the Gorkha regiments. My father was not neither is my brother neither am I in the Gorkha profession. We are simple Nepalis from Himachal Prdesh, India.

Dear Gorkha Jangaran and Navnirman Manch,
I will have to thank you. At least you seem to believe that one can make a great deal of money by blogging. That is quite an inspiration for bloggers all over the world.
As for your – ‘Bangali bhagao ani Darjeeling Bachao’ slogan…. I wish you all the best for that… when the Bengalese are forced to leave from Darjeeling and treated as ‘Jews during the Second World War’, I beg you to start your FASCIST CAMPAIGN with me….I must be the first to be remove …. Because for me Darjeeling Hills is not for any single race to own, it is a gift from the Lord, Our God and the greatest pleasure of my life has been being born in this blessed land. I have devoted my life to this land. If God wants me and my family to be uprooted from this Land by the likes of you, then so be it! But then again, not as long as I will have anything to do with it.
