    Dear Editor,

This is with respect to ‘Have Your Say’ in your 15th January-14th February, 2008 edition of Darjeeling Times dotCom. Ajoy Edwards’s fine rhetoric in ‘Vision for a better Darjeeling’ notwithstanding, one cannot help but wonder what caused him to plunge headlong into uncharted water (read, Politics) - that too in a sinking ship!

In the first place, Ajoy is heir to a household brand-name in the hills of Darjeeling, Sikkim, and probably, in Bhutan, Nepal and the North-East too. Therefore, unlike other affluent business families of Darjeeling, he has, willy-nilly, put his business in the line of “political fire”. Also, Ajoy gives the impression of being a well-educated, socially-conscious and discerning individual. So, what devil coaxed him into openly aligning with a party that is ruled by a megalomaniac with false delusions of omnipotence, and whose leaders are nothing but robotic “yes-men”?

One can only wonder at what political or social or monetary - not necessarily in that order - compulsions forced Ajoy to join the GNLF. For, if what Ajoy claims in his article is to be believed, there exist forums other than political by which one can constructively contribute to society. Thus, ‘Vision for a better Darjeeling’ is full of sound and fury, signifying nothing, very much similar to the speeches delivered by his political bosses for the past 20 years.

    Yours sincerely,
    Raja Lama.
